36 Research Committee Report The academics in the School of Education have increased their research output quite significantly and a few notable research studies conducted and published by the academics are discussed below. All of these publications, and many more, challenge extant ways of thinking and proffer prospects for improved practice in line with social justice principles, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the School and University goals. • Prof. A Ndofirepi’s three books and eight chapters focus on Western hegemony and ideology in relation to African episte- mologies and pedagogies, drawing on multidisciplinary social justice collaborative projects. • Dr ED de Klerk’s research has focused on quality education amid the Covid pandemic within the context of the SDGs. • Dr EP Barnett’s research uses a capabilities framework to in- form the effective implementation of education policies. • Dr E Groenewald explores human agency through students’ aspirational capital within social justice narratives, drawing on social cognitive theory and critical emancipatory theory. • Dr J Sibanda’s book chapter dispels the myth of linguistic homogeneity in monolingual classrooms and accentuates the complexity of language use in STEM multilingual contexts. • Dr W Botes’ research reports on the implementation of a lesson study approach to enhance lesson preparation among pre-service teachers during a work-integrated learning (WIL) process. • Dr R Fru’s book chapter examines the critical discourse of representation, power and hegemony in history textbooks, as well as silence in representational practices. • Dr E Groenewald and Dr T Mpisi’s international conference presentation explores student perceptions and experiences of specific modules within a transformed curriculum.
