51 Postgraduate Committee Report In the School, we have numerous interesting research projects led by researchers in the fields of Computer Science, Data Science, Biological Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Chemistry. These contribute to topical diversity and address the research niches of the school. Current research projects cover elements such as the design and development of various machine learning algorithms for specific applications such as e-voting, data security, the study of SARS-CoV-2 mutation behaviour and pandemic monitoring, models that can manipulate big data, neural network-based decision-making models, and artificial intelligence systems for farming applications, among many other essential subjects. In regard to biodiversity we have projects that study the occurrence, distribution and behaviour of small vertebrates and invertebrates in South Africa, with the aim to map their incidence and variety, as well as the ecological im- pact of these organisms in the country. In the Chemistry discipline, current research is focused on the synthesis, characterisation and evaluation of a range of materials for application in catalysis, ener- gy, bioactivity and environmental remediation. Our postgraduate students are exposed to a plethora of theoretical approaches that are important for developing the requisite practical skills in their work. Consequently, they can apply theory to help address industrial and societal challenges such as data management, predictive modelling, pollution monitoring and control, ecological conservation, and the challenges associated with the water–ener- gy-food nexus. Overall, our students graduate with adequate skills as required by industry and research, and most are readily accepted by various institutions for further studies. The number of honours students has increased from previous years. This implies that more energy and resources are being directed towards this group of students. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, a considerable number of our students have done significant work towards their proposals. We therefore expect to continue with the momentum and graduate more students from this and residual cohorts. The Committee has been working as a team, and we look forward to a continuation of the student-centredness and collegiality. Prof. Nhamo Chaukura Chairperson
