{"id":12761,"date":"2020-11-19T15:28:52","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T13:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/inaugural-meeting-of-convocation-copy\/"},"modified":"2020-11-22T02:27:57","modified_gmt":"2020-11-22T00:27:57","slug":"spu-on-gender-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/spu-on-gender-based-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"SPU on Gender Based Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sol Plaatje University does not condone any form of Gender Based Violence and the University takes seriously any experiences pertaining to both staff and students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sexual harassment in particular that manifests in explicit and subtle ways is strongly condemned.<\/p>\n<p>There have been no formal complaints regarding sexual harassment, rape or homophobia reported through the accepted normal structures as provided for in University policies during recent months. There was one incident, that was not formally reported to Campus Security, which involved a third party, and which has been dealt with by the relevant company. It is important to note that there is legislation prohibiting SPU from sharing any specific information regarding this incident.<\/p>\n<p>The values of Sol Plaatje University support the rights of all students, and especially the rights of female students, to study in an environment where they are safe. In support of these values, SPU has taken measures and has gone to great lengths to ensure that the safety of our students is and remains a priority. It is, however, important to note that the safety of any individual also requires responsibility and accountability for their own safety.<\/p>\n<p>Sol Plaatje University launched its observance of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/16DaysofActivism2020\">16 Days of Activism<\/a> by hosting a public lecture on Thursday, 12 November 2020, presented by Professor Thuli Madonsela entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/public-lecture-by-professor-thuli-madonsela\/\"><em>Gender Based Violence and Femicide: An Escalating National Crisis<\/em><\/a>. This lecture was the impetus for SPU to begin the dialogue around Gender Based Violence and about how our community will address the problem. During the 16 Days of Activism the SPU SRC will run an awareness drive around personal experiences of staff and students related to Gender Based Violence.<\/p>\n<p>Sol Plaatje University is a new and growing university which endeavours to put the necessary structures and protocols in place to support the victims of Gender Based Violence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sol Plaatje University does not condone any form of Gender Based Violence and the University takes seriously any experiences pertaining to both staff and students.&nbsp; Sexual harassment in particular that manifests in explicit and subtle ways is strongly condemned.
