{"id":15498,"date":"2021-04-10T09:21:19","date_gmt":"2021-04-10T07:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/spu-academics-publish-in-the-uk-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-01-29T16:21:17","modified_gmt":"2022-01-29T14:21:17","slug":"reviving-the-black-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/reviving-the-black-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"Reviving the black archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Humanities invites you to an online seminar entitled: \u201cReviving \u201cthe Black Archives\u201d: Resurrecting Benedict Wallet Vilakazi with a focus on the utility and meaning of African languages and Literatures in higher education\u201d by Prof. Nompumelelo \u201cMpume\u201d Zondi &#8211; Professor and Head of the African Languages Department at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.up.ac.za\/\">University of Pretoria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe works of Benedict Wallet Vilakazi deserve some recuperation to a central position in the Southern African literary canon especially at a time when decoloniality is a buzzword in our institutions of higher learning. This outcome (one among others) is for Vilakazi to be recognised and acknowledged as a pillar of excellence in African scholarship, and his work to be awarded a pivotal position in various disciplines, both locally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Having been awarded (posthumously, in 2016) the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepresidency.gov.za\/national-orders\/order-ikhamanga-0#:~:text=The%20Order%20of%20Ikhamanga%20is,Order%20is%20awarded%20in%20gold.\">Order of Ikhamanga<\/a>: Gold, the highest national acclaim the South African government can bestow on a citizen, confirms the relevance and stature of the re-interpretation of Vilakazi\u2019s work, within the framework of his life and the socio-historic context that shaped it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15503 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nompumelelo-zondi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nompumelelo-zondi.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nompumelelo-zondi-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nompumelelo-zondi-219x270.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>Nompumelelo \u201cMpume\u201d Zondi is a Professor and Head of the African Languages Department at the University of Pretoria. She is an NRF-rated scholar and has published a corpus of work with high impact journals such as Folklore Society, South African Journal of African Languages, Education as Change, Literator and Agenda, to mention a couple.
