{"id":33115,"date":"2022-07-15T10:28:58","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T08:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/spu-gemsboks-on-the-podium-at-the-ussa-games-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-07-20T13:00:24","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T11:00:24","slug":"27th-south-african-sociological-association-conference-held-at-sol-plaatje-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/27th-south-african-sociological-association-conference-held-at-sol-plaatje-university\/","title":{"rendered":"27th South African Sociological Association Conference held at Sol Plaatje University"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"33115\" class=\"elementor elementor-33115\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4c891cce elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4c891cce\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6a345ff7\" data-id=\"6a345ff7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71cfc1c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71cfc1c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The School of Humanities, at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/\">Sol Plaatje University<\/a><\/span> (SPU), successfully hosted the 27th South African Sociological Association Conference (SASA), between 10 \u2013 13 July 2022, which was preceded by a pre-conference doctoral workshop that attracted over 15 doctoral fellows from different universities in South Africa.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conference was convened under the theme: &#8220;Sociology and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Reimagining the Present and the Future\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The keynote address was given by Professor Sari Hanafi, the President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isa-sociology.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">International Sociology Association<\/span><\/a> (ISA). This was the first hybrid SASA conference and opens the way for the new mode of hosting conferences. About 120 delegates attended the conference in person and many others logged in online from across the globe. The delegates who attended in person were from several countries including United States of America, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, and Cameroon amongst others.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The discussions covered a wide range of topics presented under various themes. Six postgraduate students and two alumni from SPU\u2019s School of Humanities presented their research projects. This is a significant step towards building a research and postgraduate culture at the university.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The delegates were also impressed with the university&#8217;s modern and technologically advanced infrastructure, which enabled SASA to hold a hybrid conference.\u00a0The conference was supported by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nihss.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">National Institute of Humanities and Social\u00a0Science<\/span><\/a> (NIHSS),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etdpseta.org.za\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority<\/span><\/a> (ETDP SETA)\u00a0and the Northern\u00a0Cape Tourism\u00a0Authority.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four critical\u00a0issues\u00a0were raised at the conference:\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"text-align: justify;\"><li>How\u00a0psycho-social issues\u00a0negatively affected\u00a0humanity<\/li><li>The impact of pandemics on social life<\/li><li>The importance of African knowledge systems in understanding humanity and social life and lastly;<\/li><li>The distance\/gap between law and justice in holding the government and private sector accountable for atrocities (such as the\u00a0Marikana Massacre) against the citizens<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conference leaves us with questions we must\u00a0ponder on\u00a0as a university.
