{"id":3477,"date":"2018-12-11T20:48:55","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T18:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10.10.4.47\/?p=3477"},"modified":"2019-07-31T21:11:47","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T19:11:47","slug":"spu-partners-with-eskom-in-science-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/spu-partners-with-eskom-in-science-project\/","title":{"rendered":"SPU partners with Eskom in science project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPU, as part of its community outreach initiative, seeks to establish a partnership with the organisers of the Expo for Young Scientists in the Northern Cape to establish a collaborative relationship with them and with participating schools within the Frances Baard education district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 1 of the SPU project that dealt with hosting workshops\nat the University for learners from participating schools ended on 3 August\n2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learners presented their science projects, either completed\nor partially completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the assistance of the mentor-student teachers (both\nfrom the Intermediate Phase and Senior\/FET Phases), and lecturers involved with\nthe project, learners received guidance on how to present, display and interact\nwith the judges regarding their science project during the regional science\nexpo competition held in August at the Mayibuye Centre in Galeshewe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Phase 2 of the SPU project, nine of our senior science\neducation students applied to act as shadow judges or as judges. Transport to\nand from the university residence and the science expo venue was provided by\nthe Department of Basic Education, Northern Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Feedback on the 2018 SPU Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Schools that\nparticipated in the SPU-run workshops expressed their appreciation to the\nUniversity for hosting workshops for their learners and exposing learners to an\nenvironment that motivated them to develop their interest in science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was the\nfirst time in the SPU project that a school entered the Technology Innovation\ncategory with the emphasis on robotics. We need to bring on board our\nTechnology staff in the future to participate in the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The four\nparticipating schools were always in full attendance at all the workshops and\nthe relationships with the respective science teachers from the participating\nschools became well established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Two learners\nfrom the project won bronze medals for their science projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Future plans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To encourage\nparticipation in the fabrication of projects in the field of robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Establish\nand develop a much more cordial and professional relationship with the\ncoordinators of the regional science expo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To plan\nworkshops that are more interactive and to invite good science teachers to make\ninput in guiding learners in their decision-making and fabrication of their\nscience projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To encourage\nour senior science students to participate in the project either as mentors or\nto become judges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPU, as part of its community outreach initiative, seeks to establish a partnership with the organisers of the Expo for Young Scientists in the Northern Cape to establish a collaborative relationship with them and with participating schools within the Frances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/spu-partners-with-eskom-in-science-project\/\" class=\"read-more\">Read More &#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3478,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[56,4],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-3477","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education-news","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
