{"id":3963,"date":"2017-06-20T08:29:01","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T06:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/?p=3963"},"modified":"2020-03-08T16:27:11","modified_gmt":"2020-03-08T14:27:11","slug":"sol-plaatje-building-wins-at-fulton-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/sol-plaatje-building-wins-at-fulton-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Sol Plaatje building wins at Fulton Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Sol Plaatje University Library C004 was the overall winner in the \u2018Buildings Greater than Three Storeys\u2019 category, Architectural Concrete in the Fulton Awards 2017. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AECOM is the Principal Agent for this prestigious project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fulton Awards, held every two years by the Concrete Society of Southern Africa, took place at a venue in the dramatic Drakensberg mountains on 3 June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named for the late Dr <strong>Sandy Fulton<\/strong>, the awards continue to celebrate the legacy of scientific and technological advances in concrete within the built environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Judges\u2019 Citation referenced the Sol Plaatje Library C004 as a \u201cbold and original project that pushes the boundaries of architectural and engineering design, which required very high expectations from the concrete to perform not only as a structural but also as an aesthetic, material.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end result was a \u201cspectacular\u201d three-dimensional&nbsp;envelope which allows a 2.7-m-wide perimeter void between the external envelope and the floor plates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This resulted in an envelope as an integrated \u2018wall and roof\u2019 shell that is functionally, structurally, and technically independent of the \u2018building\u2019 within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main contractor, Murray &amp; Dickson Construction, managed the\nunusually demanding staging and shuttering&nbsp;of&nbsp;the huge areas of the free-standing\nexternal envelope walling, delivering a highly-refined, consistently-silky,\noff-steel surface finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis landmark library not only celebrates concrete as its main material,\nbut it gives concrete a highly-visible civic and sculptural presence. Concrete\nbecomes one of the key features of the main pedestrian spine of the new\nuniversity campus, which links it to the surrounding city of Kimberley,\u201d the\nJudges\u2019 Citation read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AECOM was appointed in May 2014 by the University of the Witwatersrand to provide project-management services relating to the development of the Sol Plaatje University precinct in Kimberley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team is under the leadership of <strong>Michael Moller and Bradley Marais<\/strong> who leads the 24 people from the Building and Places business line who have participated in the completed projects, as well as projects currently underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AECOM\u2019s first task order, from 1 July 2014 to 31 March 2016, was\ncompleted on time for the start of the 2016 academic year, and within the\ncumulative budget of about R750 million for the first three building projects\nand associated infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of the total programme, comprising all projects completed to date, as well as projects currently underway, is about R1.5 billion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team earned high praise from the client, with AECOM receiving an extension of its contract up to May 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sol Plaatje University Library C004 was the overall winner in the \u2018Buildings Greater than Three Storeys\u2019 category, Architectural Concrete in the Fulton Awards 2017.
