{"id":4438,"date":"2019-02-27T15:29:08","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T13:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/?p=4438"},"modified":"2019-07-31T20:29:22","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T18:29:22","slug":"humanities-academics-in-landmark-translation-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/humanities-academics-in-landmark-translation-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanities\u2019 academics in landmark translation project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three <a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/index.php\/humanities-overview\/\">School of Humanities\u2019<\/a> academics are contributing to a landmark project which will see seven novels and one work of non-fiction translated from English to Setswana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven works, known as The Repatriation of Letters, is\npart of a two-year project which involves four other translators: Wame Molefhe,\nLorato Trok, Tuelo Gabonewe, Shole J Shole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, which is expected to be completed by the end\nof this year and includes Mhudi, the work of Sol Plaatje, is being coordinated\nby Sol Plaatje University creative writing lecturer, translator and novelist,\nSabata-mpho Mokae. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seasoned translator and academic, Shole J. Shole, who is\nbased at the North West University in Mahikeng, is supervising the team of\ntranslators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other works which are being translated include <em>Taung Wells<\/em> by Martin Koboekae, <em>Sarcophagus<\/em> by Tuelo Gabonewe, <em>This Book Betrays My Brother<\/em> by Kagiso\nLesego Molope, <em>Maru<\/em> by Bessie Head, <em>Call Me Woman <\/em>by Ellen Khuzwayo and <em>Matters of Life and Death<\/em> by Lesego\nMalepe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, the criteria for the selection was that the\nworks should be in English but set in Setswana-speaking communities or that the\nauthor\u2019s mother tongue is Setswana, or both. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sabata-mpho says that the project intends to increase the\nnumber of prose works in Setswana where there is a dire shortage of such. At\nthe moment, schools and universities use the same works year after year as\nthere are not many from which to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says that it is hoped the project will assist towards\nmainstreaming literary translations, which is a respectable creative process\nbut has not been adequately done and promoted in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is made possible by funding from the Northern\nCape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, which Shole prefers to term \u201cTranscreation,\u201d\nwas inspired by the argument he made in the 1980s that Sol Plaatje\u2019s <em>Mhudi<\/em> is essentially a Setswana story\nwritten in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is also a case study for literary translation\nstudents and scholars. Already several of the involved translators have\ncommitted to writing essays on their translation processes or the philosophical\nargument for literary translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is hoped that DSAC will fund the next phase of the\nproject which will involve 10 non-fiction works (memoirs and biographies) and\npoetry.
