Fulbright scholars at SPU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two American women cycling up the hill daily (on SPU bikes) from Belgravia to SPU are our first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cies.org\/\">Fulbright<\/a> Scholars.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adeola Ajirotutu is from New York City.&nbsp; She has an undergraduate degree, in Religious and Italian Studies, from the University of Pittsburgh; and obtained her Masters in International Human Rights from the University of Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria Mulrooney is from Florida and obtained her undergraduate degree, in English Language Arts Education, from the University of Central Florida.&nbsp; She then went on to the University of Mississippi where she studied towards her Masters in Higher Education and Student Personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Developing an Academic Literacy Framework for the University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They arrived at SPU at the end of January this year to begin their nine-month placement in the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Programme Development under the mentorship of <a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/index.php\/spu-gets-its-first-nrf-rated-academic\/\">Dr Nhlanhla Mpofu<\/a>.&nbsp; They are assisting in developing an Academic Literacy Framework for the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fulbright Program is an educational exchange\nprogramme sponsored by the US government and designed to increase mutual\nunderstanding between the people of the United States and the people of other\ncountries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adeola and Maria are in Kimberley as part of the\nFulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program, an element of the Fulbright\nUS Student Program.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It provides recent US graduates or graduate students opportunities to engage in a cultural exchange experience as English Teaching Assistants in the host country.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fulbright ETAs have strong leadership skills, have\nreached high levels of academic achievement, are dedicated to community\nservice, and are enthusiastic about adapting to new environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Both curious about <\/strong><g class=\"gr_ gr_34 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"34\" data-gr-id=\"34\"><strong>similiarities<\/strong><\/g><strong> between SA &amp; US<\/strong>A<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both women chose to come to South Africa because they were curious about the cultural and political similarities between South Africa and the United States of America.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had expected to be placed in secondary\nschools as English Teaching Assistants but since they both have Masters degrees,\nthey were placed at SPU to work with Dr Mpofu.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both have embraced this opportunity to make a\nlasting contribution to the development of SPU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria has already been given an opportunity\nto guest-lecture in the School of Education, an experience which she thoroughly\nenjoyed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adeola and Maria have adapted very well to\nlife in Kimberley.&nbsp; They have found the\npeople welcoming, friendly and helpful.&nbsp;\nThey recently attended their first cricket match and were treated to\nseats in a hospitality suite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are looking forward to seeing more of\nour beautiful country and experiencing their
