{"id":4865,"date":"2019-04-29T11:34:09","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T09:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/?p=4865"},"modified":"2019-07-31T20:35:20","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T18:35:20","slug":"land-acquired-for-spu-khrd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/land-acquired-for-spu-khrd\/","title":{"rendered":"Land acquired for SPU-KHRD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sol Plaatje University is one step closer to realising its research and education focus on rural development issues in the Northern Cape region, following the confirmation that it has been granted land by the Northern Province Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In announcing the\ndevelopment, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Yunus Ballim &nbsp;says that the University was recently informed\nby the MEC in the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development\nthat approximately 24 hectares on their research farm outside of Carnarvon had been\napproved as a grant to SPU to establish the SPU Knowledge Hub for Rural\nDevelopment (SPU-KHRD). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The land area is situated about\n80kms from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) site and is adjacent to the SKA\nadministrative offices and farm research management facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SPU-KHRD will focus on six focus areas that are expected to lead to evidence-based social and economic development opportunities for the greater Carnarvon area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current focus areas\nare: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>data science<\/li><li>agriculture\nunder water-stressed conditions<\/li><li>climate\nchange<\/li><li>teacher education and\nrural school development<\/li><li>rural public health (in\npartnership with Stellenbosch University) <\/li><li>science-based tourism.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"804\" height=\"634\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Caranavon-graphic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Caranavon-graphic.png 804w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Caranavon-graphic-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Caranavon-graphic-768x606.png 768w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Caranavon-graphic-342x270.png 342w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowledge and data from these focus areas will be synthesised at the SPU-KHRD as the evidence base for policy development by the provincial and national government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the medium term, the University\nenvisages that its facility will be able to accommodate the management staff, with\naccommodation for around 50 students, researchers and visitors, a teaching and\nseminar venue and basic life science laboratory,\u201d says Ballim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"621\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/identified-land-parcel.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/identified-land-parcel.png 940w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/identified-land-parcel-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/identified-land-parcel-768x507.png 768w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/identified-land-parcel-360x238.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><figcaption>Planned layout of the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture Research Farm indicating the area of interest for the location of the SPU land parcel <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says that this is an important\ndevelopment for SPU as it expresses \u201cour commitment to ensuring that our\nacademic efforts find real expression in social development in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sol Plaatje University is one step closer to realising its research and education focus on rural development issues in the Northern Cape region, following the confirmation that it has been granted land by the Northern Province Government.
