{"id":5269,"date":"2019-06-27T15:28:23","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T13:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/?p=5269"},"modified":"2020-04-18T15:41:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-18T13:41:27","slug":"eucation-school-heads-research-tackles-tricky-language-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/eucation-school-heads-research-tackles-tricky-language-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Msimanga tackles language debate"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Head of the School of Education, <a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/index.php\/dr-audrey-msimanga-appointed-head-of-school-of-education\/?preview_id=4405&amp;preview_nonce=f20a1b14db&amp;preview=true&amp;_thumbnail_id=4412\">Dr Audrey Msimang<\/a>, presented an exciting paper at the second School of Education seminar in May.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Her research and presentation aimed to create further understanding of the nature and role of classroom talk in the teaching and learning of science. <br>The study also drew on the findings from the development of the Language in Science Project, which took effect from 2014.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"398\" height=\"417\" class=\"wp-image-4406\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Audrey-Msimanga.jpg\" alt=\"School of Education newly appointed Head Dr Audrey Msimanga\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Audrey-Msimanga.jpg 398w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Audrey-Msimanga-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Audrey-Msimanga-258x270.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Dr Audrey Msimanga<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The paper, entitled \u201cTalking Science: Teaching and Learning Science in South Africa\u201d, included a review on recent curriculum developments, diversity of the context, policy, evidence from the classrooms and language factors in the classrooms.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Her research was conducted from 2014 to 2018 in different phases in the East Gauteng District.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The data showed that out of 144 pre-service teachers, 70 did not agree with permitting home language in the classroom, 58 said they would allow it, and the remaining 16 had no opinion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>In the case of student teachers in their fourth year in educational studies, only 20 out of 74 preferred to be taught in their home language while 54 preferred the co-switching medium of instruction and teaching.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The discussions presented two schools of thought:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Learners do well if they are taught in their mother tongue as a foundation in their early learning<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Learners must gain an understanding of English early in their education life so that they do not struggle at a later stage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Teachers\u2019 perceptions on the use of language in the classroom indicated that they faced a complicated situation of using English and other languages in teaching maths and science while being cognisant that teaching in a mother tongue did have some benefits.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>For example, in the Northern Cape\u2019s Namakwa District, where the vernacular of the province \u2013 Afrikaans &#8211; is the most used language of teaching, the district recorded the highest pass rate percentage of 83,7% in the province.
