{"id":5291,"date":"2019-07-09T09:17:03","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T07:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/spu\/?p=5291"},"modified":"2020-03-02T23:05:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T21:05:26","slug":"international-short-fiction-accolade-for-spu-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/international-short-fiction-accolade-for-spu-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Student takes African short fiction award"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"5291\" class=\"elementor elementor-5291\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-735a10 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"735a10\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-33b674e1\" data-id=\"33b674e1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79cf0ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"79cf0ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPU Humanities\u2019 student Sisca Julius, who is studying Afrikaans, creative writing, anthropology and heritage studies, was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/kandlprize.wordpress.com\/honey-bee-by-sisca-julius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inaugural K &amp; L<\/a> prize for her story, Honey Bee.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award which comes with a substantial prize was founded last year by the New Zealand-based Nigerian novelist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmc.aut.ac.nz\/profile\/idoko-ojabo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Myles Idoko<\/a>, author of Black River: An Account of Christmas Preacher.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: inherit;\">The award\u00a0is presented for unpublished short fiction, inspired by historical events in\u00a0Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Julius\u00a0says her winning entry is a \u201cnarrative about the way the Coloured people were\u00a0stripped of their language\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explains that although she loves writing in Afrikaans, English and Khoi languages, she longs \u201cto cloak my mouth in clicks like my grandmother and her mother\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She fears\u00a0that the Nama language will become extinct in South Africa, and \u201cif you lose\u00a0your language, you lose your culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0711176 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"0711176\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.youtube.com\\\/watch?time_continue=8&amp;v=JLtN62kZgxQ&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPU Humanities\u2019 student Sisca Julius, who is studying Afrikaans, creative writing, anthropology and heritage studies, was awarded the inaugural K &amp; L prize for her story, Honey Bee.
