{"id":6100,"date":"2019-10-21T14:53:12","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T12:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/?p=6065"},"modified":"2020-04-18T17:22:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-18T15:22:17","slug":"prof-pityana-delivers-annual-sol-plaatje-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/prof-pityana-delivers-annual-sol-plaatje-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof Pityana delivers annual lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Unisa Vice-Chancellor, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barney_Pityana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof Barney Pityana<\/a>, was invited to deliver the Sol Plaatje annual public lecture which took place last week.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here follows his thoughts which he set out in the public lecture entitled, &#8220;A Pariah in the Land of One\u2019s Birth:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/about-sol-plaatje\/\"> Sol Plaatje<\/a> and Reflections on Higher Education in South Africa in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prof Pityana explains that the paper explores aspects of Sol Tshekisho Plaatje\u2019s <em>ouvre<\/em> especially on Language, Literature, and outlook on justice for the people of South Africa.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I had begun to think that I would explore as vehemently as I could his campaigns especially on the effects of the Native Lands Act, 1913 but decided against that on account of that being a subject on its own.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper uses Plaatje as a handle on which to hang some thoughts on intellectual life in South Africa and the role of the higher education system as we have received it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I propose to \u201cthink aloud\u201d about possible reform of the higher education system in our times.
