The second annual SPU Community Big Walk on Saturday, 24 February 2024, united 781 walkers from the Kimberley community alongside staff and students of Sol Plaatje University (SPU)<\/span><\/a>. This event reaffirmed one of SPU\u2019s strategic objectives: fostering community engagement by building relationships and instilling pride among Kimberley residents and those across the Northern Cape. This year\u2019s event marked an extra-special milestone as we celebrate 10 years of existence.<\/p>

The morning buzzed with excitement as participants braved the chilly air for a 4.9km walk that celebrated community spirit and camaraderie. Prof Andrew Crouch, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, extended a warm welcome to all and started proceedings by leading a countdown from 10 to zero, symbolising the University\u2019s decade-long journey. He was then joined by the Sol Plaatje Municipality Mayor, Cllr Kagisho Sonyoni, as they walked to promote health and camaraderie within the community.<\/p>

This walk was a perfect occasion for family and friends to connect, offering a sneak peek at the beautiful SPU campuses and engaging in various activities. The event was graced by Kimberley notables actor Thami Mngqolo and radio host Karabo Mothomme (K-9 Star), and featured an array of entertainment including children\u2019s activities like jumping castles and pony rides, a live DJ set by Man-Deep, Josh & MJ Musician and DJ Stacey, and a beer garden for adults.<\/p>
