In a remarkable showcase of talent and innovation, Sol Plaatje University<\/a><\/span> (SPU) students achieved second place in the prestigious L\u2019Or\u00e9al Brandstorm<\/a><\/span> Local Finals held in Johannesburg on 11 April 2024. The competition, known for challenging young minds to reinvent beauty through technology, saw SPU\u2019s Go Green Team demonstrate exceptional creativity and strategic thinking.<\/p>

The L\u2019Or\u00e9al Brandstorm competition invites teams to submit forward-thinking ideas with the potential to transform the professional beauty industry. This year\u2019s challenge focused on integrating sustainable practices into beauty solutions, a theme that aligns closely with global environmental concerns. The competition began in February, with teams required to register and submit their proposals online by March.<\/p>

Representing SPU and the Northern Cape, the Go Green Team consisted of Liyema Swartbooi, Letsego David Makomane, and Paul Christephor Kruger, guided by their mentor Ms Eva Mamabolo, and further helped by collaborative efforts from the Centre for Applied Data Science (CADS) Acting Director, Dr Silas Verkijika, the GKSS mentors and the Brandstorm community. Their project, which targeted the reduction of plastic waste through innovative technology, earned them a coveted spot in the top six at the finals.<\/p>

SPU\u2019s notable performance at the competition highlights its commitment to fostering innovation and addressing key global challenges. This achievement is significant for the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and the University at large, enhancing our reputation as the hub for future entrepreneurship initiatives.<\/p>

As these young innovators conclude their degrees, the experience and recognition gained through the Brandstorm competition promise to open new paths in their professional journeys. L\u2019Or\u00e9al South Africa has expressed interest in integrating these bright minds into their operations in the future, underscoring the impact and potential of the students\u2019 innovative solutions.<\/p>
