Sol Plaatje University<\/span><\/a> (SPU) proudly leads as a digitally empowered university, pioneering undergraduate data science education, boasting a comprehensive digital library, and striving to be a digitally enhanced using digital technologies to augment the University\u2019s operations, academic delivery, and research capabilities. Freddie Manyate, a graduate of SPU personifies this ambition. He was recently named one of the Top 15 Young Geeks Class of 2024<\/a><\/span> and serves as the chairperson of the Geekulcha Student Society (GKSS) at SPU. His phenomenal achievement signifies inspiration for the younger generation in our digitally immersed world. Currently, he is completing his Advanced Diploma in ICT at SPU.<\/p>

From a young age, Freddie was fascinated with technology, often disassembling gadgets to understand their workings. This curiosity drove him to pursue a career in the digital tech industry. His studies in Computer Applications Technology (CAT) at Vuyolwethu Secondary School laid a solid foundation for his future endeavors, supported by his sister who was pursuing a degree in computer science.<\/p>

Freddie recalls that one of his toughest challenges was the Security Summit 2024 Blue Teaming Challenge. Despite being new to cybersecurity, his dedication and ability to rapidly learn new concepts led him to succeed against seasoned professionals. Another significant challenge was developing a tutor request portal and a class attendance portal for SPU\u2019s Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Programme Development. These projects involved considerable research, testing, and collaboration.<\/p>

Currently, Freddie and his friends are working on developing an online merchandise shop for SPU\u2019s Department of Institutional Advancement, which he describes as a significant learning experience due to its complexity and need for extensive collaboration.<\/p>

He identifies the digital divide as a major challenge for aspiring tech innovators in South Africa, particularly in underprivileged areas. His vision includes establishing an innovation hub at SPU, inspired by the Tshimologong precinct, to enhance computer literacy, incubate entrepreneurial ideas, and expose learners to industry practices.<\/p>

Through mentorship programmes, workshops, and collaborative projects, Freddie aims to nurture a community of tech-savvy individuals who can drive technological advancements and create job opportunities, ultimately bridging the digital divide. He envisions a vibrant and inclusive tech ecosystem in South Africa and beyond.<\/p>
