SPU<\/span><\/a> alumnus, Mr Curtis Jeaven, is a powerful example of how education, purpose-driven leadership and cultural advocacy can transform communities.<\/p>

As part of SPU\u2019s Youth Month feature series, his story exemplifies – and is a great introduction to \u2013 this week\u2019s theme, \u201cFrom Campus to Change-Makers\u201d, offering a compelling look into how our graduates are shaping society beyond university walls.<\/p>

Mr Jeaven was appointed Chairperson of Council of the William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG)<\/span><\/a> in December 2024 – a leading national cultural institution based in Kimberley, Northern Cape. WHAG is renowned for its extensive art collection and innovative programmes, serving as a key platform for arts education, heritage preservation and creative expression in Kimberley.<\/p>

In a historic moment, Mr Jeaven signed the Ministerial Shareholder\u2019s Compact on behalf of the Council on 12 May 2025 in Cape Town. This agreement formally aligns WHAG with the strategic priorities of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture<\/span><\/a>, strengthening its role as a national driver of inclusive cultural development.<\/p>

\u201cThis Compact challenges us to go beyond the rhetoric and actively remove the systemic barriers that have excluded many from cultural participation,\u201d Jeaven shared. \u201cIt\u2019s a call to action for more inclusive storytelling and programming that resonates with all South Africans.\u201d<\/p>

His appointment to such a distinguished council is more than symbolic. Coming from a historically marginalised background, Jeaven\u2019s leadership at this level represents active advocacy for underrepresented voices, indigenous knowledge systems and equitable access to the arts. Under his guidance, WHAG is evolving into a more agile, community-rooted institution that anchors cultural life in the Northern Cape – championing intergenerational storytelling, heritage preservation, and inclusive programming.<\/p>

Jeaven\u2019s journey began at Sol Plaatje University, where he completed a Higher Certificate, Bachelor\u2019s, and Honours in Heritage Studies. He is currently pursuing his Master\u2019s degree in the same field. At SPU, he gained more than academic knowledge – he embraced the values of critical inquiry, servant leadership and community engagement. He immersed himself in research projects such as Cosmo-Art, collaborated on grassroots initiatives and went on to found the Northern Cape Heritage Pioneers<\/span><\/a>, a non-profit focused on protecting and celebrating local heritage.<\/p>

\u201cSPU taught me that heritage is fundamental for moving towards a more socially cohesive society,\u201d he reflects. \u201cLeadership is about service and courage, and heritage must be lived, not just preserved.\u201d<\/p>

To aspiring leaders, Jeaven offers this advice:<\/p>

Dream with integrity and act with purpose. Our sector needs bold, compassionate leaders who prioritise people over titles and who use every opportunity – no matter how small – to learn and lead.\u201d<\/p>

Curtis Jeaven\u2019s journey reflects what SPU envisions: not just graduates, but graduates who lead change.
