{"id":78917,"date":"2025-06-25T08:34:36","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T06:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/?p=78917"},"modified":"2025-06-25T09:36:29","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T07:36:29","slug":"afrikaans-100-a-northern-cape-reflection-at-spu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\/index.php\/afrikaans-100-a-northern-cape-reflection-at-spu\/","title":{"rendered":"Afrikaans 100: A Northern Cape reflection at SPU"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"78917\" class=\"elementor elementor-78917\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1e6ba3b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1e6ba3b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a62979e\" data-id=\"a62979e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad319c2 elementor-widget-tablet__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad319c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spu.ac.za\">Sol Plaatje University<\/a> <\/span>(SPU), through its Centre for Creative Writing and African Languages and in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/61575976595061\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Northern Cape Heritage Pioneers<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/atkv.org.za\/ons-storie\/takke\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ATKV-tak Tal Trek<\/span><\/a>, proudly hosted a heritage-rich event in celebration of <a href=\"https:\/\/afrikaans100.org\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Afrikaans 100<\/span><\/a> &#8211; marking a century since Afrikaans was recognised as an official language of South Africa.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the theme: Eeufees van Afrikaans: Van Herkoms tot Toekoms (Centenary of Afrikaans: From Origins to Future), the event formed part of the national Afrikaans 100 campaign led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrikaansetaalraad.co.za\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Afrikaanse Taalraad<\/span><\/a> (ATR) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/museu.ms\/museum\/details\/17464\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument<\/span><\/a> (ATM), supported by a broad, inclusive coalition of Afrikaans organisations across the country.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a province where Afrikaans is deeply embedded in everyday life &#8211; across rural communities, intergenerational storytelling and cultural expression &#8211; the celebration held particular resonance. SPU\u2019s involvement aligned with its broader efforts to create inclusive spaces for dialogue around language and identity, grounded in community. Through its Centre for Creative Writing and African Languages, SPU continues to deepen critical engagement, encourage creativity and support academic inquiry into the languages and voices that shape the Northern Cape.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof Russel Viljoen, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at SPU, welcomed guests and reflected on the significance of the Afrikaans centenary within the broader context of South Africa\u2019s linguistic and cultural heritage. He emphasised the role of universities in cultivating inclusive conversations about language and history, noting Afrikaans as a living, evolving language with deep roots in diverse communities.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr Marga Stander, Senior Lecturer in Afrikaans at SPU, explored the complex origins of Afrikaans in her presentation &#8211; highlighting how the language existed and evolved long before its official recognition in 1925. She also reflected on the critical role that women played in the development of Afrikaans and the richness of its various forms across time and place.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr Carl Julius, Lecturer in Afrikaans, brought a distinctly Northern Cape lens to the conversation. His presentation illuminated the region\u2019s unique expressions of the language &#8211; including Nama, Kaapse Afrikaans, Griqua Afrikaans and Boer Afrikaans &#8211; showcasing powerful examples of how language reflects lived experience.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof Victor Teise, Acting Director of the Centre for Creative Writing and African Languages, shared the Centre\u2019s vision: to promote and preserve indigenous languages in the province and to create platforms for creative expression, transformation and access. He announced the upcoming Anthology of Northern Cape Languages, a collection of poems that reflects the linguistic diversity and cultural soul of the region.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A dynamic roundtable discussion followed under the theme: \u201cWhy are we celebrating 100 years of Afrikaans, if it already existed before 1925?\u201d The session was facilitated by SPU alumni Mr Curtis Jeaven and Mr Jacqued Horne, the session brought together SPU lecturers, members of various ATKV branches and Afrikaans100 campaign leaders. Together, they unpacked the political and symbolic weight of 1925, while honouring the long-standing oral and literary traditions of Afrikaans.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a heartfelt keynote contribution, Mr Daniel Slamat shared personal reflections from his upbringing and considered how Afrikaans continues to evolve. He called for a future in which Afrikaans grows as an inclusive, accessible language that affirms all who speak it &#8211; regardless of dialect, background or geography.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adding youthful voices to the conversation, learners from Girls High School, Northern Cape High School, !Xunkhwesa Combined School, Vaalrivier High School, Roodepan Primary and Floors Primary School shared their perspectives on why Afrikaans remains relevant in their lives. Performances of original poetry by Ms Yolanda Strauss, Ms Lynthia Julius, and Girls High learner Blessing Adu-Guamfi, added a creativity to the day\u2019s programme.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SPU\u2019s Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Debra Meyer, concluded the event by reaffirming the responsibility of higher education institutions to reflect the linguistic and cultural makeup of their communities. She emphasised SPU\u2019s role in promoting Afrikaans not only as a medium of instruction but as a lived and shared experience in the Northern Cape &#8211; especially for historically marginalised communities.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Afrikaans Centenary event at SPU was more than a commemoration &#8211; it was a reclamation. It positioned the University as a cultural anchor in the Northern Cape, advancing language, identity and inclusivity in ways that honour the past and shape the future.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Afrikaans 100: &#8216;n Noord-Kaapse Refleksie by SPU<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SPU het deur sy Sentrum vir Kreatiewe Skryfwerk en Afrikatale en in samewerking met die Northern Cape Heritage Pioneers en ATKV-tak Taal Trek, &#8216;n erfenisryke geleentheid ter viering van Afrikaans 100 met trots aangebied. Dit is hierdie jaar &#8216;n eeu sedert Afrikaans as &#8216;n amptelike taal van Suid-Afrika erken is.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Onder die tema: Eeufees van Afrikaans: Van Herkoms tot Toekoms, het die geleentheid deel van die nasionale Afrikaans 100-veldtog gevorm.\u00a0 Dit is deur die Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR) en die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) gelei en deur &#8216;n bre\u00eb, inklusiewe koalisie van Afrikaanse organisasies regoor die land ondersteun.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In &#8216;n provinsie waar Afrikaans diep in die alledaagse lewe ingebed is, regoor landelike gemeenskappe, intergenerasionele storievertelling en kulturele uitdrukking, het die viering besondere weerklank gevind. SPU se betrokkenheid het in lyn met sy bre\u00ebr pogings gestaan om inklusiewe ruimtes vir dialoog rondom taal en identiteit, gegrond op gemeenskap, te skep. Deur sy Sentrum vir Kreatiewe Skryfwerk en Afrikatale gaan SPU voort om kritiese betrokkenheid te verdiep, kreatiwiteit aan te moedig en akademiese ondersoek na die tale en stemme wat die Noord-Kaap vorm, te ondersteun.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof Russel Viljoen, Dekaan van die Fakulteit Geesteswetenskappe by SPU, het gaste verwelkom en oor die betekenis van die Afrikaanse eeufees binne die bre\u00ebr konteks van Suid-Afrika se taalkundige en kulturele erfenis besin. Sy het ook die kritieke rol wat vroue in die ontwikkeling van Afrikaans gespeel het, beklemtoon en oor die rykdom van sy verskillende vorme oor tyd en plek besin.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mnr Carl Julius, dosent in Afrikaans, het &#8216;n duidelike Noord-Kaapse lens na die gesprek gebring. Sy aanbieding het die streek se unieke uitdrukkings van die taal belig, insluitend Nama, Kaapse Afrikaans, Griekwa Afrikaans en Boere-Afrikaans. Mnr Juluis het sy bespreking afgesluit met kragtige voorbeelde van hoe Afrikaans as taal verskillende gemeenskappe bymekaar kan bring.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof Victor Teise, Waarnemende Direkteur van die Sentrum vir Kreatiewe Skryfwerk en Afrikatale, het die Sentrum se visie gedeel: om inheemse tale in die provinsie te bevorder en te bewaar en om platforms vir kreatiewe uitdrukking, transformasie en toegang te skep. Hy het die komende Bloemlesing van Noord-Kaapse Tale met &#8216;n versameling van gedigte aangekondig, wat die taalkundige diversiteit en kulturele siel van die streek weerspie\u00ebl.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;n Dinamiese rondetafelbespreking het onder die tema: &#8220;Waarom vier ons 100 jaar van Afrikaans, as dit reeds voor 1925 bestaan het?&#8221; gevolg. Die sessie is gefasiliteer deur SPU-alumni Mnr Curtis Jeaven en Mnr Jacqued Horne. Die sessie het SPU-dosente, lede van verskeie ATKV-takke en Afrikaans 100-veldtogleiers bymekaargebring. Saam het hulle die politieke en simboliese gewig van 1925 ontrafel, terwyl hulle die langdurige mondelinge en liter\u00eare tradisies van Afrikaans vereer het.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In &#8216;n hartlike hoofbydrae het Mnr Daniel Slamat persoonlike refleksies oor sy grootwordjare gedeel en verduidelik hoe Afrikaans steeds ontwikkel.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hy het gevra vir &#8216;n toekoms waar Afrikaans as &#8216;n taal groei wat almal insluit en vir almal toeganklik is. In hierdie toekoms sal elkeen wat Afrikaans praat, erkenning kry, ongeag watter dialek hulle praat, waar hulle vandaan kom, of waar hulle woon.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deur jeugdige stemme tot die gesprek te voeg, het leerders van Girls High School, Ho\u00ebrskool Noord- Kaap, !Xunkhwesa gekombineerde skool, Ho\u00ebrskool Vaalrivier, Roodepan Primary, asook Floors Primary School hul perspektiewe oor waarom Afrikaans relevant in hul lewens is, gedeel. Voorlesings van oorspronklike po\u00ebsie deur Me Yolanda Strauss, Me Lynthia Julius, en Girls High-leerder, Blessing Adu-Guamfi, het kreatiwiteit tot die dag se program gevoeg.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SPU se waarnemende visekanselier en hoof, Prof Debra Meyer, het die geleentheid afgesluit deur die verantwoordelikheid van ho\u00ebronderwysinstellings te herbevestig om die taalkundige en kulturele samestelling van hul gemeenskappe te weerspie\u00ebl. Sy het SPU se rol in die bevordering van Afrikaans beklemtoon, nie net as &#8216;n onderrigmedium nie, maar as &#8216;n geleefde en gedeelde ervaring in die Noord-Kaap, veral vir histories gemarginaliseerde gemeenskappe.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Die Afrikaanse Eeufeesgeleentheid by SPU was meer as &#8216;n herdenking; dit was &#8216;n herwinning.
