The weekend honoured the author, intellectual and activist after whom the University is named, a place where human effort, knowledge and purpose converge in service of humanity.

This year’s memorial weekend carried special significance as SPU bid farewell to its inaugural Chancellor, Justice Steven Majiedt, who has served the University with distinction since 2016. The coming together of these two moments, reflection on Plaatje’s legacy and gratitude for Justice Majiedt’s leadership, created a weekend deeply rooted in the values that define SPU’s identity: service, intellect, humility and transformation.

Lessons in Justice and Humanity

The weekend began with SPU’s flagship event, the Annual Sol Plaatje Lecture. The 2025 lecture, delivered by Justice Steven Majiedt, honoured Plaatje’s enduring legacy by exploring the intersection of law, justice and moral responsibility.

SPU’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr David Kanguwe, welcomed guests to an occasion that honoured one of South Africa’s extraordinary sons, describing Plaatje as “a writer, translator, journalist, political activist and believer in education and dialogue.” He noted that Justice Majiedt embodies those same ideals of justice, equality and intellectual rigour, and that both men remind us that “the pursuit of justice remains both a personal calling and a collective responsibility.”

Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal Designate, Prof Debra Meyer, described the lecture as “one of the most meaningful gatherings in the Northern Cape’s academic and civic life.” She encouraged attendees to “pause, reflect and draw lessons from Plaatje’s legacy,” reminding all that learning at SPU is both a privilege and a moral duty.

Prof Jesmael Mataga, Acting Director of the Research Office, delivered a moving reflection that linked Sol Plaatje’s legacy to ancestry, intellect and institutional memory. He reminded the audience that memorial lectures are more than formal commemorations; they are moments of communion with those who came before us, whose ideas and courage continue to shape our conscience. Tracing the lecture’s journey from its origins at the University of Bophuthatswana under Prof Bob Leshoai to its revival through the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust, he celebrated how the tradition has drawn leading thinkers who challenge and inspire society. He described the Annual Sol Plaatje Lecture as “a flagship moment in SPU’s academic and cultural calendar, held each October to honour Sol Plaatje’s living legacy,” and a time when the University pauses to reflect, celebrate and reaffirm its identity as a living testimony to the legacy of a man whose words, courage and intellect changed a nation.

In his lecture, Justice Majiedt reflected on the transformative power of education and the University’s duty to foster justice and equality. The lecture series continues to stand as a beacon of thought leadership and reflection on Plaatje’s vision of an intellectually conscious society. Delivering his lecture, Justice Majiedt drew profound parallels between his judicial journey and Plaatje’s life of service. Under the theme Lessons Learnt During My Career as a Judge from the Life and Legacy of the Venerable Sol Plaatje, he spoke of humility, purpose and integrity: “We as judges must remain humble servants of the people, like Sol Plaatje. We live in a country with serious challenges, and yet I remain optimistic because there are millions with that same selfless spirit. When we dispense justice, we must do so equally, to the rich and the poor, the mighty and the meek, the powerful and the voiceless.” Through these words, the lecture became a reaffirmation of Plaatje’s belief that knowledge must serve and that service must enlighten.

A Farewell Rooted in Legacy and Service

As the reflections of the morning gave way to an evening of gratitude, the University held a Farewell Dinner in honour of Justice Majiedt, a heartfelt celebration attended by his family and friends, provincial and local government representatives, business partners and University stakeholders.

SPU Chair of Council, Prof Randall Carolissen, paid tribute to the Chancellor’s leadership, describing him as “an activist and a dear friend who embodies our institutional DNA, to lead with impact.” He reflected on the Chancellor’s Bursary Fund and the Talent Pipeline Programme (TPP), which have supported more than 100 learners on their path to university access, saying, “He leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond this province.”

SPU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Designate, Prof Debra Meyer, described Justice Majiedt as “a true son of the Northern Cape who helped lay the foundation of a new institution built on integrity and impact.” She thanked his family for their unwavering support, acknowledging the quiet strength behind his public service.

A message from SPU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Andrew Crouch, was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Prof Paul Green. He wrote, “I know this has been a personal journey for you, as it has been for me. You have always been deeply passionate about access and inclusion. With the support of the University and our private-sector partners, the Talent Pipeline Programme vision became a reality in 2021, ensuring that hundreds of learners have since improved their matric results and qualified for university entry. The programme identifies the top-performing learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 from under-resourced schools across the Northern Cape, with a focus on rural areas. It provides academic enrichment as well as social and psychosocial support to prepare these learners for success in higher education and beyond. Through this initiative, SPU helps strengthen the province’s education ecosystem and widen access to opportunity.

Former TPP learner Jemima Freeman, now a third-year Bachelor of Arts student at SPU, is a living testament to the life-changing impact of the programme. It gave me confidence when I had none and reminded me of who I was when I felt lost.”

Jemima’s story encapsulated the collective spirit celebrated throughout the weekend.
