The award of a SARChI Chair reflects confidence in the University\u2019s research leadership, institutional direction and capacity to host research of strategic importance.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI)<\/b><\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Established in 2006, SARChI is one of the country\u2019s most significant instruments for advancing research excellence at public universities. Through a competitive national process, SARChI Chairs are awarded to leading scholars to build sustainable research programmes, supervise postgraduate students and strengthen research capacity in priority areas.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">The initiative provides long term support that enables the development of research teams, postgraduate pipelines and national and international collaborations. SARChI Chairs are expected to generate high quality research outputs while contributing to academic leadership, institutional development and societal impact.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">For Sol Plaatje University, the appointment of its first SARChI Chair represents a strengthening of its research capacity and postgraduate development.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Academic leadership within an evolving institution<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Professor Diale brings a distinguished record of academic leadership, research excellence and social impact to the role. A Full Professor and NRF C2 rated researcher, she has held senior academic positions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uj.ac.za\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">University of Johannesburg<\/span><\/a>, including Head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Vice Dean of Teaching and Learning, and President of the UJ Convocation.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Her research spans career development, neurodiversity, Early Childhood Development and inclusive education, with a sustained focus on equity and access. In 2022, she established the Centre for Neurodiversity at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus, translating scholarship into institutional and community engaged social impact.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Professor Diale is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Education and a registered Educational Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She has maintained professional practice alongside her academic career. She also served as a visiting professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unn.edu.ng\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">University of Nigeria Nsukka<\/span><\/a> from 2019\u20132025, reflecting her engagement within regional and international research networks.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Her contributions have been recognised through nominations for the Higher Education Women Leaders Awards and the Fabulous Woman Awards.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Marking progress in research leadership<\/b><\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Speaking on the appointment, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Debra Meyer said the awarding of a SARChI Chair to Sol Plaatje University marks an important moment in the institution\u2019s research journey.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u201cThe appointment of Professor Boitumelo Diale as Sol Plaatje University\u2019s first SARChI Chair holder reflects both the quality of our scholarship and the steady maturation of our research environment,\u201d Professor Meyer said. \u201cIt is also fitting that this milestone is achieved by a scholar who has consistently broken new ground at the University.\u201d<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Professor Meyer noted that Professor Diale was previously appointed as Sol Plaatje University\u2019s first female Dean, and now becomes the institution\u2019s first SARChI Chair holder. \u201cThese achievements speak not only to Professor Diale\u2019s academic leadership, but also to the opportunities that a young university can create when excellence, commitment, and purpose align,\u201d she said.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">She added that the Chair reinforces the University\u2019s commitment to producing research that is socially responsive and nationally relevant, with particular emphasis on education and inclusive development. \u201cThis appointment strengthens our responsibility to ensure that research excellence translates into meaningful impact for the communities we serve,\u201d Professor Meyer said.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Research with relevance for the Northern Cape<\/b><\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">The SARChI Chair in Inclusive Rural Education and Early Childhood Development is aligned with the Northern Cape\u2019s educational context. The province continues to face challenges related to access, resourcing, teacher development and early childhood provision, particularly in rural and remote communities.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Professor Diale\u2019s research programme will focus on evidence-based approaches to inclusive practices in education, teacher professional development, early childhood interventions and policy engagement. The work is designed to inform classroom practice, strengthen educator capacity and contribute to education policy at provincial and national levels.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">This orientation reflects Sol Plaatje University\u2019s role as the only university in the Northern Cape and its mandate to produce knowledge that is locally grounded while contributing to broader national priorities.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Strengthening SPU\u2019s research trajectory<\/b><\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">Over the past five years, Sol Plaatje University has developed a coherent and focused research profile, underpinned by growing research output, the establishment of targeted research centres and the appointment of nationally rated researchers across disciplines.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">The SARChI Chair appointment complements existing research strengths in areas such as arid region studies, data science, entrepreneurship, and social transformation. It also supports the University\u2019s strategic objectives of expanding postgraduate education, deepening research partnerships, and strengthening institutional research capability.<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\"><b data-ogsc=\"\">Gratitude, responsibility and purpose<\/b><\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-ogsc=\"black\">\u201cI receive this appointment with gratitude and humility. It has been a profound privilege to serve Sol Plaatje University as Dean during this period. As I reposition myself in this new role, I am deeply conscious of the responsibility that comes with this honour. This Chair is not about an individual\u2019s achievement, it is about building a collective research endeavour that serves children, educators, and communities and contributes to both national and international scholarship.
