Sol Plaatje University (SPU)<\/span><\/a> hosted the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)<\/span><\/a> Business Development Games on 25 April 2026, bringing together more than 100 BCom Accounting students enrolled in the programme for an immersive, practice-oriented learning experience.<\/p>

Using the Commercium business simulation, students assumed the role of decision-makers, navigating complex scenarios such as taxation, inflation, and shifting market conditions. The activity required participants to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, while developing strategic thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills essential for the profession.<\/p>

The programme also provided valuable industry engagement through participation from the Auditor-General of South Africa. Ms Boniswa Mbeka, Chartered Accountant (CA), emphasised the importance of ethical leadership, encouraging students to anchor their decisions in principles rather than rules. Ms Nasira Lemmetjies, young professional from Auditor General South Africa (AGSA)<\/span><\/a> reinforced the role of mindset in career progression, urging students to approach the workplace with openness and a positive outlook.<\/p>

This initiative aligns with SPU\u2019s commitment to academically rigorous and industry-relevant teaching and learning. It also follows the recent AGA(SA) endorsement of the University\u2019s BCom Accounting programme by SAICA, affirming the programme\u2019s quality and responsiveness to professional standards.<\/p>

The session was facilitated by Ms Estelle Abrahams and included a motivating address by Mr Khotso Nkoe, who encouraged students to pursue excellence with purpose and resilience.<\/p>

As students prepare to complete their studies and transition into graduates and future alumni, experiences such as the SAICA Business Development Games play a critical role in bridging academic learning with professional practice. The event reflects the University\u2019s ongoing focus on developing graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the economy and broader society.<\/p>
