Dear ALASA Delegate,
It is our great pleasure to warmly welcome you to the 28th International Conference of the African Languages Association of Southern Africa (ALASA), hosted by Sol Plaatje University (SPU). We are delighted to welcome you to Kimberley, Northern Cape, from 06–09 July 2027, for what promises to be an engaging, stimulating and enriching scholarly gathering.
The conference theme, “Enhancing the Economic Potential of African Languages in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,” invites us to explore the role of African languages beyond preservation and cultural identity, and to consider their potential in innovation, digital inclusion, knowledge production, employment and economic development. As artificial intelligence and language technologies continue to transform the way we communicate, work and access knowledge, the conference provides an important platform to reflect on how African languages can meaningfully participate in and benefit from these developments.
ALASA 2027 will bring together academics, researchers, postgraduate students, policymakers, language practitioners and other stakeholders to engage with contemporary issues in African languages. The programme will feature an exciting line-up of keynote speakers, a diverse range of sub-themes and scholarly presentations, as well as opportunities for networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration. These engagements will create space for delegates to share research and experiences, exchange ideas, and explore new possibilities for advancing African languages in both academic and broader societal contexts. Hosting ALASA 2027 is a significant opportunity for Sol Plaatje University to strengthen research and scholarly collaboration while contributing to the advancement and visibility of African language scholarship.
We are equally excited to welcome you to Kimberley, a city rich in history, culture and heritage. We hope that your visit will provide not only a rewarding academic experience, but also an opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of the Northern Cape.
As we gather around this important theme, we invite you to join us in exploring the opportunities, innovations and possibilities that can position African languages as active contributors to a digitally connected, knowledge-driven and economically empowered Africa.
We look forward to welcoming you to Sol Plaatje University’s Central Campus in Kimberley and to sharing an inspiring and memorable ALASA 2027 with you.
Kind regards
SPU- Local Organising Committee
