Book Launch: Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje – Morata Baabo

June 2022 marks 90 years since Solomon Plaatje passed away.

As part of celebrating and reflecting on his life and legacy, Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) School of Humanities, in conjunction with Xarra Books, will launch a Setswana biography, ‘Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje – Morata Baabo, which was written by his protégé, Dr Modiri Molema, more than 50 years ago. This edition will mark the first time this biography is published in the language in which it was written. This is also the only biography of Sol Plaatje to be written by a person who knew him personally and spent time with him. In the book Molema reflects on the Plaatje he knew for nearly 40 years.

SPU Creative Writing Lecturer and multiple award-winning Setswana novelist Sabata-mpho Mokae edited the book. He also co-authored the introduction with SPU Extraordinary Professor Brian Willan.

The author’s niece, retired University of Botswana academic Dr Leloba S. Molema, wrote the foreword.

Join us at 18:00 on Thursday, 23 June 2022 via MS Teams for the much-anticipated book launch as we commemorate this literary legend.
