Inaugural Intergenerational Colloquium

In Commemoration of the Late Sanusi Vuzamazulu Credo Mpumelelo Mutwa

Mkhulu Vusamazulu Mpumelelo Credo Mutwa was born on 21 July 1921 in the (now) Kwazulu-Natal Province in South Africa and would have turned 99 years of age on this day in 2020.

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) will commemorate the life journey and exodus of mkhulu Mutwa at 99 years, together with his family, the Credo Mutwa Foundation (CMF), the Credo Mutwa Reference Group (CMRG), our students, the youth of South Africa, communities of healers and leaders in Africa and the government of South Africa in the sports, arts and culture.

The inaugural mkhulu Mutwa intergenerational colloquium will be hosted by Sol Plaatje University in partnership with the National and Provincial Departments of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and the CMF and CMRG under the theme: Re-educating the NATION on the cultural and spiritual life and journey of mkhulu Credo Mutwa as a reference point to Afrikan Identity.

A previously scheduled commemoration of mkhulu Mutwa’s life and journey, to be hosted at Sol Plaatje University, was postponed due to the nationwide lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The purpose of the commemoration is to:

– Re-educate the youth and university community about the cultural and spiritual life and journey of mkhulu  Mutwa;

– Share experiences of living in the times of mkhulu Mutwa in the age of COVID-19;

– Narrate and disseminate sacred and Afrikan stories from people who used to work with mkhulu Mutwa;

– Learn how to enrich and contribute to unfolding decolonised curricula with the ethos and philosophies of mkhulu Mutwa and;

– To elevate nation building and social cohesion through national and continental projects focusing on the old and emerging knowledge of mkhulu Mutwa. 

Speakers will include:

– uGogo Nosipho Mutwa – mkhulu’s daughter

– Sister Rutendo Ngara – Chairperson of the CMF

– Dr Sibongile Masuku – SPU Heritage Studies Lecturer

– Dr Mongane W. Serote – Chairperson of the CMRG & Poet Laureate

– SPU and University of Venda Students
