Centenary Programme in Commemoration of the late Credo Mutwa

The late mkhulu Vuzamazulu Credo Mpumelelo Mutwa who called himself an isanusi, which is a type of Zulu diviner, would have been 100 years old on 21 of July 2021.

In 2020 on his 99th birthday, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in partnership with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (NC-DSAC), Credo Mutwa Foundation (CMF) and Credo Mutwa Family hosted the Inaugural Credo Mutwa Intergenerational Colloquium under the theme: re-educating the NATION on the cultural and spiritual life and journey of mkhulu Credo Mutwa as a reference point to Afrikan Identity.

On 9 September 2021, the SPU, DSAC, NCDSCA, CMF and the Credo Mutwa family will be hosting the 2nd intergenerational colloquium in his honour. Under the theme Retracing the footsteps/legacy of mkhulu Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa through prayer, Pan Afrikan poetry, interpretation of sculptures, conversations, music and art (Celebrating the year of arts, culture and heritage in Afrika).

The colloquium held with elders, academics and grounded thinkers will provide an interpretative session of Credo Mutwa’s sculptures by Prof. Pitika Ntuli, provide a reflection on the 2020 Intergenerational Colloquium and the role of writers by Dr. Mongane Serote, give an account on how the Credo Mutwa Foundation is preserving his legacy by Sr. Rutendo Ngara, and convey messages of support from gogo Nosipho Mutwa, and various provincial and national stakeholders. The SPU will emphasise the importance of Credo Mutwa’s scholarship.

On the 10 September 2021, SPU, DSAC and NCDSAC and UNISA will be facilitating an educational tour with SPU students and lecturers that will follow the development of his spiritual and cultural life through educational talks, documentary screenings and questions and answer session.

The public is invited to participate in the intergenerational colloquium on the 9 September 2021.
