The BEd programmes in Senior Phase and FET Teaching and Intermediate Phase Teaching are specifically designed to prepare students for teaching in the South African schooling system.
National imperatives such as the shortage of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Geography and Technology teachers, as well as regional imperatives such as the need for Afrikaans and Setswana teachers in primary and secondary schools in the Northern Cape were important considerations in the design and development of these programmes.
More It is intended for students who want to obtain a degree in Education, specialising in Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Geography, Technology, History, Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa or Setswana that would qualify them as professional educators for the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training or Intermediate Phase. These qualifications are also suitable for expertise in education-related careers such as training officials The purpose of the BEd degree is to provide a well-rounded education that will empower graduates with an integrated knowledge base enabling them to demonstrate competence, commitment and responsibility as academically and professionally qualified beginner teachers. The curriculum and the accompanying classroom practice is a shaping force of the students admitted to this University. The approach to teaching, learning development and assessment on this degree programme is strongly guided by the intellectual and professional attributes that our graduates need to develop in order to have a positive impact on the schooling needs of the diverse communities in our country. This programme targets potential education students and practising teachers who wish to deepen their knowledge of Curriculum Studies and who wish to develop their research capacity in the related research methodology and techniques in this field.
It is incumbent on all prospective Curriculum Studies students to show a high-level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence in Curriculum Science which students must demonstrate by interpretation, analysis, evaluation and reporting as empowered curriculum agents.

The rules of the University in respect of admission to degree study are applicable for admission to this degree.
In addition, to this, a four-year professional teaching degree ((with an average of at least 60% in the exit level modules) or an appropriate Bachelor’s degree AND a recognised professional teaching qualification (with an average of at least 60% in the exit level modules) are the minimum admission requirements for this degree.

A high level of theoretical and independent engagement will form the conceptual framework for this qualification.
The purpose of the Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics Education is to strengthen and deepen students’ knowledge in mathematics education and to enable the student as a working professional, to engage in advanced reflection and development utilising a systematic survey of current and past thinking practices in mathematics education.
This programme will be offered on a block release basis during school holidays and weekends during the school term.

The General Rules of SPU in respect of admission to Postgraduate Diploma studies (aligned with the HEQSF) apply to this postgraduate diploma.
- Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics Education programme is subject to departmental approval on the advice of the School of Education Postgraduate Committee.
- For a student to be admitted into the programme, studies in Mathematics Education at level 7 in the preceding qualification is needed.
- The preceding qualification can be a 4-year B.Ed. degree, OR
- a 3-year degree capped by a PGCE, OR
- ADE in Mathematics Education.
- Recognition of Prior Learning will be applied to students who do not meet the minimum entry requirements to the programme.
All applications are subjected to a selection process.

The Advanced Diploma is an undergraduate qualification designed for the school Management Team to develop their skills and knowledge required in the changing world of education. Furthermore, this qualification aims to empower School Management Teams (SMTs) to develop the skills, knowledge and values needed to lead and manage schools effectively, as complex learning organisations, and to contribute to improving the implementation of quality learning and teaching in schools.

Minimum requirements
The General Rules of SPU in respect of admission to the Advanced Diploma (aligned with the HEQSF) are applicable to this qualification.
To be admitted to the Advanced Diploma in Education Leadership and Management, a student must possess an acknowledged qualification at NQF Level 6, such as:
A formal professional teacher qualification at REQV level 14 or above (DBE;2015).
A four-year Bachelor of Education degree, or a general first degree or diploma, plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or a former Higher Diploma in Education (Postgraduate) may be presented for admission (NQF exit level 7).
A former Advanced Certificate in Education (current NQF level 6; on the former level 8 NQF) or a former further Diploma in Education which allows a former professional teaching qualification, or a former four-year Higher Diploma in Education, may also be presented for admission into an Advanced Diploma.
In addition, a new Advanced Certificate (current NQF level 6; on the current level 10 NQF) which followed a former Diploma in Education (including a National Professional Diploma in Education) may also be presented for admission into an Advanced Diploma.
It is expected of all students to have access to a computer device and data /Wifi in order to submit all the assignments on Moodle.

Programme expectations:
Applicants are required to upload the following documents:
1 Certified matric certificate
2 Certified ID copy
3 Certified academic transcript of a relevant bachelor’s degree at an exit NQF Level 7, or an appropriate 360-credit exit NQF level 6 Diploma
4 Certified copy of the actual degree obtained.
Take note that applications without the necessary documentation as indicated above will not be processed.
A student will spend a mandatory minimum of 10 weeks engaged in teaching practice duties in selected Kimberley schools that will be identified by the University.
No concessions will be made regarding the compulsory teaching practice responsibilities of PGCE students.
The PGCE programme will be offered on a full-time basis and students will be expected to attend face-to-face lectures and micro-teaching sessions on campus.

The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in the Senior (SP) and Further Education and Training Phase (FET) is a one year 132 Credit undergraduate full-time qualification at a NQF level 7. The PGCE programme offered by the School of Education is specifically designed to prepare students for teaching in the South African Secondary Schooling system. The purpose of the PGCE programme is to provide a well-rounded education to pre-service teachers without a teaching qualification that will equip graduates with an integrated knowledge base enabling them to demonstrate applied competence, commitment and responsibility as academically and professionally qualified beginner teachers.

development of competences to organise learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts.
The General Rules of SPU in respect of admission to Postgraduate Diploma studies (aligned with the HEQSF) are applicable to this postgraduate certificate.
1.0 The admission to the Post Graduate Certificate in Education is also subject to the SPU’s Policy on Admissions and the discretion of the Registrar in the School of Education at the SPU.
2.0 A student who wishes to apply for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education should adhere to the following admission requirements:
3.1 An approved Bachelor’s degree at an exit NQF Level 7, or an appropriate 360-credit exit NQF level 6 Diploma.
3.2 The Bachelor’s degree or the diploma should include two recognised school subjects as outlined in Section B of this document.
4.1 To specialise in one FET school subject, the Bachelor’s degree or diploma should include a major module (that qualifies as a school approved subject) with a credit load of at least 48 credits at a NQF level 7 that stretches over 2 to 3 academic years.
4.2 In addition to the FET school subject, one other major module (that qualifies as a school approved subject) from the Bachelor’s degree or diploma, with at least a credit load of 24 credits at a NQF level 6 that stretches over one academic year should be selected as a SP school subject.

The purpose of the PGCE certificate is to provide a well-rounded education that will equip graduates with an integrated knowledge base enabling them to demonstrate applied competence, commitment and responsibility as academically and professionally qualified beginner teachers. On completion of the PGCE, the student graduate will be able to teach two recognised school related subjects in schools across South Africa. In other words, by obtaining this qualification, in addition to an existing undergraduate degree, allows PGCE students to become teachers.

The Master of Education degree (MEd) is designed for the teacher in practice and educators working in other fields of education.
The rationale of this programme is to open pathways for graduates to further their studies by conducting academic research in the education discipline with a specific focus on sub-disciplines of education, or a combination of part-disciplines.
The degree aims to fulfil the need for more and appropriately qualified graduates who will be able to conduct outstanding research that would address various challenges faced by education regionally, nationally and globally.
More The qualification will enhance and deepen graduate’s knowledge in various fields of education, such as curriculum studies, policy studies, early childhood development and psychology of education, enabling them to contribute significantly to the development of education. The MEd aims to deliver graduates that will contribute towards the development and improvement of education as a discipline.
The Master of Education (MEd) degree is a NQF level 9 qualification.
To gain access to the programme, a candidate must have obtained an approved Bachelor of Education (BEd) honours degree with an average of 60% OR a cognate Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Education, and additional research modules of at least 30 credits.
These minimum admission requirements will lay the foundation required to conduct research at NQF level 9.
Students who enrol for this programme also need to be computer literate and have an internet connection to be successful in the programme.
Admission to this programme is further subject to Sol Plaatje University’s Policy on Admissions (REG/004) and any other general admission requirements of the Sol Plaatje University, as well as discipline-specific requirements of a programme as specified in the School of Education rule book.
The University’s Policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be applied in instances where applicants do not meet the minimum admission requirements for entry into the MEd programme. Equity and access considerations will also be taken into account without risking the integrity of the programme.
The selection of candidates will be the responsibility of the School of Education’s Postgraduate Committee under the auspices of the Head of School.
Students will be selected based on the average of the exit level outcomes of the previous qualification.
MEd applicants will have to submit with their applications a letter of motivation / a detailed description of the research that they intend undertaking
This is a Master of Education degree by research, and no modules/courses are applicable. However, all candidates will be required to complete a compulsory institutional Research Design Course
This degree is designed for any teacher in practice, and educators working in other fields of Education, such as in the Department of Education.
The Master of Education degree will pave the way for students to apply for and study towards a PhD in Education, a highly sought-after degree recognized nationally and internationally.
The knowledge, skills, and dispositions candidates will develop will enlarge and contribute towards the existing pool of Education specialists and professionals working in various fields as policy researchers, curriculum specialists, school psychologists, and early childhood development practitioners.
The skills, knowledge, and dispositions acquired in this qualification will enable candidates to apply for various senior or specialized work opportunities within Education or elsewhere.
