Farewell to SPU’s first Chairperson of Council

Outgoing SPU Chairperson of Council, Judge Yvonne Mokgoro

Outgoing Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Chair of Council, Judge Yvonne Mokgoro, was honoured at a special farewell dinner at the Protea Hotel Kimberley on 24 November 2021.

Judge Mokgoro is SPU’s first Chairperson appointed to the SPU Council and served in this seat from August 2014 to June 2021, two months short of seven years.

Deputy Chair of Council, Ms Jenny Glennie, welcomed guests at the farewell function comprised of the SPU council, SPU Chancellor Judge Steven Majiedt, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Andrew Crouch, the Senior Management Team, the Office of the University Registrar and the Institutional Advancement department. In recognising Mokgoro’s contribution to the University, Ms Glennie commended Judge Mokgoro for leading Council with great compassion and care.

Highlighting the role she played and looking back on her national and global achievements, the incoming Chair of Council, Judge Violet Phatshoane, who served as a council member under Mokgoro’s stewardship said: “You have laid a solid foundation and have immensely contributed to this institution and the higher education sector, I will not disappoint you”.

Judge Majiedt applauded Mokgoro’s commitment to the University, stating that her selfless character has given back to her native community and that the University is proud to have been led by a humanist.
