Public lecture by Professor Thuli Madonsela

To mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism, Sol Plaatje University invites you to a virtual public lecture on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide which will be delivered by Professor Thuli Madonsela on Thursday, 12 November 2020.

Amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa was experiencing yet another pandemic –a gender-based violence pandemic. It is thus evident that we live in a country where gender-based violence is pervasive and women and children remain vulnerable victims due to gender inequalities and the persistence of patriarchy. This is aggravated for LGBTQIA+ communities as they face discrimination and violent stigmas that further entrenches their marginalisation.

Professor Madonsela will discuss the impact these forms of violence have on different communities and society as a whole. She will further deliberate and share thoughts on legislative and other initiatives that can curb this escalating crisis.

The online lecture will be preceded by a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Exhibition set up by third-year Heritage Studies students on Central Campus at 15:00.

Details on the lecture are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 12 November 2020

Time: 16:00 to 17:30

Venue: Library Auditorium, Central Campus, Sol Plaatje University

RSVP to attend or to request the event link: [email protected]

Please note that in-person attendance at the venue will be limited as per the Alert Level 1 regulations around public gatherings.
