The 5th annual gathering of leaders in Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) will take place in a hybrid mode from 11 to 14 October 2021 at the University of Pretoria. This event has become a significant engagement platform for the higher education entrepreneurship community in South Africa.

The theme for 2021, entrepreneurship #againstallodds, is informed by the imperative of developing entrepreneurship despite serious challenges faced within the broader socio-economic context and its impact on the higher education sector.

The third day of the EDHE Lekgotla will feature the 4th annual Studentpreneurs Indaba which is aimed at showcasing leading studentpreneurs and their businesses. It is also an opportunity for leading student entrepreneurs to advocate on their issues and thus influence the work of the EHDE.

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) will be well represented at the 2021 EDHE Lekgotla through Chad Lucas a final year Bachelor of Commerce student, who is the Chairperson of the SPU Studentpreneur Community of Practice (SCP) will attend the Lekgotla in his capacity as Deputy Chairperson of the EDHE SCP. He will also be a moderator at the Studentpreneur Indaba.

Chad has articulated his vision for student entrepreneurship at SPU as being the creation of student help centre that assists students and supports studentpreneurs. It should be a facility where studentpreneurs are able to access business, marketing, financial and networking support. He would like to see his efforts culminate in the development of an entrpreneurship culture at SPU that then resonates throughout Kimberley, the Northern Cape Province and amongst the other public universities in South Africa.

Both Mphatso Nkosi and Tumelo Molefe will attend the Studentpreneur Indaba. Mphatso who is studying towards her Advanced Diploma in ICT (Application Development) is the Co-Deputy Chairperson and Head of ICT/Media of the SCP. Tumelo is also a Co-Deputy Chairperson and Head of the Secretariat of the SCP.

The student representatives will be joined by Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs and Professor Pierre Joubert, Head of the School of Economic and Management Science and two academics from that school; Ms Gail Motlhaudi and Mr Fattinald Rangongo who are SPU representatives on other EDHE Communities of Practice.

Ms Morris wants to ensure that we grow student entrepreneurship and innovation on campus. Professor Joubert will be there to ensure that entrepreneurship and innovation which are key pillars of SPU’s five-year strategic vision and objectives place the University as an influential stakeholder in building the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Virtual participation is open to everyone who has an interest in university entrepreneurship. All key sessions will be livestreamed, between 09:00 and 17:00 daily, via the EDHE Facebook page.
