On Saturday, 14 March 2020, the Chancellor of Sol Plaatje University, Judge Steven Majiedt, together with Standard Bank, hosted a successful Golf Day at the Kimberley Golf Club in order to raise funds for student bursaries.

Sponsors who contributed to the fund include Standard Bank, Qualicon Construction, AECOM, Trecon, First National Bank, Civil Sense, Nedbank, ADAPT-IT and Nexia SAB&T.  Other sponsors such as, Datacentrix, Investec, Sanlam, XCO and Moyo Projects, provided gifts or services for the day.

At the prize-giving ceremony in the evening Judge Majiedt thanked Standard Bank for their continued and generous support of this initiative. He also thanked the Kimberley Club for their support of Sol Plaatje University and made special mention of all the other sponsors.

Professor Andrew Crouch, the Vice-Chancellor Designate of Sol Plaatje University, who participated in the Golf Day, talked about the importance of supporting student financial aid efforts. He mentioned that 87% of the almost 2200 students at the University are on financial aid and that the need for financial support will increase as the University approaches its future enrolment of approximately 8000 students within the next five years.

Mr Anton Nicolaisen, Provincial Head (Free State and Northern Cape) of Standard Bank said that it was a privilege to be a part of this event and pledged R100 000 (hundred thousand rand) for the Chancellor’s Golf Day in 2021.

Judge Steven Majiedt thanked Professor Jean Baxen, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, for the important role she is playing in keeping the university on a steady path until Professor Crouch takes up his position as Vice-Chancellor on 1 April 2020.
