Period of study: 1 Years
The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Entrepreneurship is to provide the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and small business management, thereby making them more entrepreneurial and employable. The qualification further provides students with fundamental entrepreneurship concepts and principles and small business management and application in real-life contexts and situations. The qualification is intended for students who would like to equip themselves with the skills of being self-employed instead of being dependent on a job. The qualification will thus stimulate venture creation. Furthermore, the qualification is designed to recognise the competence, knowledge and skills required for people to plan and coordinate entrepreneurial business administration functions and operations and provide business administration services in a wide range of business and organisational contexts.

This qualification can provide opportunities and assist individuals to make a new beginning by starting their own businesses. The Higher Certificate in Entrepreneurship equips students with theoretical and practical practices to develop and maintain a business. This includes a solid grounding in management, finances, communication, leadership, and much more. Today, the competitive and complex market makes it difficult to succeed as an entrepreneur. But, with the help of this course, you will learn everything you need to know to have a thriving business in your market.
Minimum requirements for admission to the programme:
- NSC with an endorsed admission to higher certificate and appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement. In addition:
- English LOLT OR HL- Level 4; OR English FAL – Level 5.
- Mathematics Level 3 OR Mathematical Literacy – Level 4.
- At least one of the following at Level 3: Accounting, Business Studies or Economics
- APS – Minimum 25 points.

This diploma provides students with the knowledge, insight and skills needed to follow a successful management career in the retail or wholesale fields.
Retail and wholesale businesses strive to satisfy the needs of consumers by providing the necessary products and services.
The retail industry offers national and international career opportunities for the graduate. The variety of retail and wholesale businesses is enormous and includes departmental stores, hypermarkets, shopping centres, speciality stores, general dealers, chain stores, supermarkets, factory stores, boutiques and restaurants. Retail managers are generally required to work in teams and the programme therefore focuses on the development of professional communication skills which prepares students to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong emphasis is placed on problem solving and students are also exposed to good management practices in the field of retailing. Our work integrated learning programme allows students to gain some retail management experience. Students are also exposed to uncompromising approaches in the ethical practice of this management discipline.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting is a professionally endorsed, career-oriented qualification offered by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS). The programme is designed to prepare students for successful careers in accounting, finance, auditing and business leadership within both the private and public sectors.
Accredited and recognised by leading professional bodies such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), the BCom Accounting provides a direct pathway to professional designations, including the Associate General Accountant (AGA(SA)). This professional alignment ensures that the curriculum meets high industry standards and equips graduates with strong technical, analytical and ethical competencies.

Through a curriculum that integrates theory with practical application, students develop expertise in accounting, taxation, auditing, financial management and governance. Graduates are prepared to address real-world challenges such as fraud, corruption and weak financial management, and to contribute meaningfully to sustainable economic development. The programme also offers clear articulation into postgraduate study, supporting long-term professional and academic growth.
Minimum requirements
The institutional regulations of SPU (General Rules) in respect of admission to degree study are applicable for admission to the BCom in Accounting Degree. As the language of instruction is English, applicants are expected to have proficiency in English of at least the equivalent to Level 4. The specific rules applicable to this degree are as outlined below:
- NSC (or equivalent) with a bachelors’ degree admission
- English HL- NSC level 4; OR English FAL – NSC level 5.
- Mathematics – NSC level 5 OR Mathematics level 4 AND Accounting level 3
Minimum APS score of 30
RPL may be applied as per University Policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Not more than 10% of the intake in any year may be approved through the recognition of prior learning.

The purpose of the BCom (Tourism Management) qualification is to develop graduates with a strong foundation in economic and management sciences, complemented by specialised knowledge and applied skills in tourism management. The qualification aims to equip learners with the competencies required to operate effectively in the tourism sector, with particular emphasis on sustainable tourism development, entrepreneurship, and destination management.
The programme seeks to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application through a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component, thereby enhancing graduate employability and readiness for the workplace. It further aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and managerial skills that enable graduates to respond to the dynamic demands of the tourism industry.
In alignment with regional and national development priorities, the qualification is designed to contribute to economic growth and job creation, particularly within the Northern Cape, by preparing graduates to leverage cultural, heritage, and ecological tourism opportunities. The Bachelor of Public Administration programme aims to develop skilled, ethical, and competent public sector professionals who can contribute to effective governance and service delivery across national, provincial, and local government spheres. The programme responds to the growing demand for qualified public administrators in the Northern Cape and South Africa by equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to manage governmental functions efficiently and effectively.
The qualification seeks to address critical skills shortages within the public sector, support the objectives of South Africa’s National Development Plan, and promote the development of a capable, professional, and accountable state. The purpose of the Advanced Diploma in E-Commerce is to develop graduates for the dynamic and rapidly evolving field of e-commerce. Minimum requirements
In order to gain access to the Postgraduate Diploma in Management a candidate needs to have obtained a preceding cognate qualification that meets NQF Level 7 exit level outcomes such as an at least 360-credit Bachelor’s degree or equivalent such as an Advanced Diploma at an NQF exit-level 7. These qualifications need to be completed with an average pass of at least 65% for the degree or advanced diploma and an average of at least 65% in the chosen discipline of specialisation. Students also need to be computer literate to be successful in the programme.
These above-mentioned admission requirements are subject to the SPU’s general admission requirements as well as those of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
The formal RPL policy of the SPU will be applied in instances where applicants do not meet the minimum admission requirements for entry into the Postgraduate Diploma in Management. A maximum of 10% of enrolment can be admitted through this avenue.

The primary purpose of the Master of Public Management and Governance is to develop researchers who can contribute to the production of knowledge at an advanced level, culminating in an independent investigative research project.
This unique intensive research qualification will provide students with the opportunity to pursue an independent investigative research project under the supervision of an academic staff member specifically designed to provide relevant skills in research design, communication, integrity, and interpretation of research results. This qualification will develop advanced skills and knowledge in Public Management and Governance while strengthening the ability to creatively solve problems in the public sector management space.
The programme targets individuals who have research and/or practical experience and who are motivated to investigate, assess, and analyse the controversies, challenges, and issues associated with the core functions of the public sector. Students are expected to not only describe problems but also come up with solutions that would enhance the capabilities of the public sector. The programme would also prepare students to gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of a career in today’s public administration and management environment. - Additionally, the prospective applicant who meets the minimum requirements will be provisionally selected pending the submission of concept note outlining their proposed research project which will be used as part of the selection criteria.
- A student pursuing an MBM degree by research may be requested by the respective discipline to sit for the Honours level research methods and theory courses for the purpose of assisting them in the development of their research proposal and or dissertation.
The following supporting documents should accompany an application:
- Certified copy of ID/passport.
- Endorsed Academic record.
- Certified copies of academic qualifications.
Note: Applications with outstanding support documents will be regarded as incomplete and will not be considered.
