Statement from SPU Management on Student Protest

To the SPU Community

Earlier this morning a number of students blocked the main entrances on the North and Central Campuses of Sol Plaatje University (SPU).

The Management of the University has engaged continuously with the Student Representative Council (SRC) about concerns around student accommodation, catering, students who are blocked from registering due to outstanding fees, and a range of other minor issues.

Earlier this week a group of students issued a Memorandum of Demand to the University which related to these very issues. The Management has since responded to this group via the SRC.

The protest action this morning is not sanctioned by the SPU SRC and seems to be linked to the annual disruptions to the academic year in the higher education sector that has been prevalent for a number of years.

SPU staff have been advised to work from home today.

The Senior Management will be meeting later this morning and a further statement will be released thereafter.

The University Management is engaging with the students, at the moment, in an attempt to resolve their grievances.
