Update: University lockdown

Further to the communication posted on Monday, 23 March 2020 and in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for a national lockdown, the SPU community is informed of the following:

  1. SPU is on total shutdown from 16:00 on Thursday, 26 March until Thursday, 16 April 2020. Only essential services such as security will be on duty. No access will be granted to staff under any circumstances.
  2. 20 April 2020 is the tentative date for the re-opening of the institution. Further communication in this regard will follow.
  3. Other than emails, alternative forms of communication will also be used by line managers to stay in touch.

Please adhere to the instructions in all earlier communication for your own safety and that of others.

This is an unprecedented moment in our national and global history that brings with it many uncertainties and discontinuities. It is an unsettling time, with decisions needing to be made with no masterplan or prediction of what tomorrow may look like.

We are all having to deal with fears and anxiety about many aspects of our lives and as such, one cannot underestimate the toll this takes on one’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

We urge you to take extra care of your health and not only your safety.

The SPU Senior Management Team wishes you and your family all of the very best during this period.

Let’s take a moment to consider those less fortunate than we are and lend a helping hand in whatever way we can.

Safety first!
