SPU Duo Called Up for Team SA at FISU Rugby Sevens World Championship

Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Mr Theo Ngqwala, Officer: Sport, and Mr Ethan Manus, a first-year Higher Certificate in Court Interpreting student, have been selected to represent Team South Africa Rugby Sevens at the 2026 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Championship Rugby Sevens, which will be held in Stellenbosch from 4 to 6 September 2026.

The FISU championship will bring together 17 teams from 14 nations across both men’s and women’s competitions.

Mr Ngqwala has been appointed Team Manager, while Mr Manus has been selected as a player in the national squad. Their selection follows a rigorous identification process involving athletes and officials from 26 South African universities participating in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Rugby Sevens competition. The squad was officially announced on 7 August 2026.

For Mr Manus, the call up marks an important step in his rugby journey. His performances for SPU Rugby, supported by his dedication and consistency, have earned him the opportunity to compete alongside some of South Africa’s leading university rugby players.

Mr Ngqwala’s appointment as Team Manager recognises his experience and leadership in university sport. His work in sport administration, rugby programme management and the broader university rugby environment has prepared him to serve within the national team management structure.

Their selection demonstrates the growing contribution of SPU Sport to developing students and professionals who can compete and lead beyond the University.

Speaking about his selection, Mr Ngqwala said, “Being selected to represent Team South Africa in Rugby Sevens is a tremendous honour and reflects the hard work, dedication and opportunities that have shaped my administrative career. I am proud to represent South Africa and SPU and look forward to making the most of this opportunity.”

For Mr Manus, the achievement carries personal significance and provides inspiration to aspiring young athletes in the Northern Cape.

“Being selected for Team South Africa Rugby Sevens is a proud and exciting moment for me. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my country and SPU, and I look forward to learning, competing and giving my best throughout the tournament. I also hope this achievement inspires young people in the Northern Cape to believe that they can reach this level and go even further.”

SPU congratulates Mr Ngqwala and Mr Manus and wishes them every success as they represent South Africa on the international stage.
