SPU’s CfERI becomes CENTIL, reflecting its expanded role

Sol Plaatje University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship & Rapid Incubator (CfERI) is now the Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Learning (CENTIL), effective 1 September 2026.

The new name reflects the Centre’s evolution and the expansion of its work across entrepreneurship, innovation and learning.

Entrepreneurship remains a central pillar of the Centre’s work. Its innovation portfolio has grown to include the Northern Cape Innovation Forum (NCIF), a Maker Space and a Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC). These additions have strengthened its role in advancing innovation and supporting entrepreneurship ecosystems.

The learning component emerged in 2025 through the piloting of the Upington Learning Centre. This further expanded the Centre’s role as a platform connecting entrepreneurship, innovation and knowledge creation.

The name CENTIL brings these areas of work together and more clearly communicates the Centre’s role to the University community, its partners and the public.

CENTIL continues to operate within the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies. It also serves as a collaborative platform supporting interdisciplinary research, innovation and engagement across faculties.
