It is with great sadness that we inform you that Dr Kamela Sekonya, a Lecturer in Physics within the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, passed away on Friday, 15 August 2020. He was involved in a fatal car accident near Warrenton while on a trip back to Kimberley from Limpopo.
Dr Sekonya came to Sol Plaatje University in 2017 from iThemba LABS in Gauteng where he was an Ion Beam Analyst whose work involved the management of a nuclear microprobe and analysis of the data.
At SPU Dr Sekonya was initially involved in signal and linear system analysis in addition to his lecturing duties and was also appointed as the Radiation Protection Officer for the School.
Professor Aifheli Gelebe the Head of School said that “the School of Natural and Applied Sciences is reeling from the shock of receiving the sad news of the untimely, sudden and unexpected death of Dr Kamela Sekonya. We are mourning a colleague as well as a friend, and it is a sad loss to the School and the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences.”
