On Friday, 8 October 2021, the University will host its annual Sol Plaatje Lecture.

Our guest speaker, Professor Sekepe Daniel Matjila, will talk about “Plaatje’s role in constructing a body of knowledge about Batswana culture” as the theme of engagement. Professor Matjila is the Director of the Centre for PAN-African Languages at UNISA.

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje, for whom this university is named, was born on 9 October 1876 in the homestead of Podisetlhogo in the district of Boshof, approximately 50 kilometres outside of Kimberley. He was a South African journalist, linguist, translator, novelist and founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (forerunner of the ANC).
