Future Alumni engagement marks new chapter in student-alumni relations at SPU

In a landmark step towards building lifelong connections, the Alumni Relations Unit in the Department of Institutional Advancement (DIA), in collaboration with the Campus Housing and Accommodation Unit, hosted Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) first-ever future alumni engagement for first-year students of Moroka Hall of Residence on Friday, 26 September 2025 at Central Campus.

The event introduced first-years to the idea that once they graduate, they become part of a powerful alumni network, not just as graduates but as lifelong ambassadors of SPU. By starting this conversation early, the University seeks to cultivate a sense of belonging and responsibility that extends far beyond graduation. Research on alumni relations has shown that the earlier students are introduced to the alumni concept, the more likely they are to remain engaged after leaving university.

The purpose of this engagement was to help students understand the deeper meaning of alumni relations and why it matters from the very beginning of their journey. A strong alumni community is vital for any institution’s growth. It enhances reputation, creates opportunities for mentorship, opens professional networks, and fosters support for future initiatives. For students, this translates into long-term guidance, career opportunities and a lasting connection to their alma mater.

The programme featured insightful talks, Q&A sessions, and alumni testimonials, all designed to give first-years an overview of what it means to be alumni and how they can start building that identity now.

Ms Mosima Mehlape, Manager: Communication and Marketing, introduced the Division of Institutional Advancement, explaining its strategic role in growing SPU’s visibility, building relationships, securing support and overseeing alumni relations as a key part of strengthening the University’s reputation and long-term impact.

Ms Tshepisho Sebeela, Acting Senior Officer: Communication and Marketing, unpacked the meaning of alumni, reminding students that alumni are not only graduates but lifelong ambassadors of the university. She highlighted opportunities such as mentorship, volunteering and future alumni activities, urging students to see themselves as representatives of SPU’s brand both in person and online.

The programme also featured alumni voices. Ms Kamogelo Mogotsi, a Master’s student, and Mr Jaden Pieterse, Lecturer in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, shared how their journeys at SPU shaped their careers and personal growth. They encouraged students to immerse themselves in campus life, pursue extracurricular opportunities and remain connected to SPU after graduating.

Mr Pieterse reminded students: “As you are progressing with your studies, always remember that you are not doing this for yourself. Be a proud SPU student. Embrace the opportunities you have now and make an impact out of it.”

Ms Mogotsi added: “Perform well, but don’t forget to laugh, make friends and refine your craft. That is what will set you free and bring you peace.”

The event concluded with closing remarks by Mr Mbokodo Mbatha, who urged students to embrace their role as future alumni and brand ambassadors of SPU.

This first engagement signals the beginning of a structured effort to embed alumni culture in the student experience from the very start. By the time these first-years graduate, they will already see themselves not only as students but as part of an enduring alumni legacy that strengthens both their futures and the future of Sol Plaatje University.
