A year of sporting excellence

As a member of the University Student Sports Association (USSA), Sol Plaatje University (SPU) attended several sport tournaments throughout 2022. One of many highlights this year was undoubtedly hosting the USSA Rugby 7s Championship games in September 2022. Our SPU male and female teams may not have made it all the way to the finals, but the event highlighted the sporting excellence we uphold at SPU.

A few highlights from the USSA tournaments in 2022 include:

  • The male football team completed and maintained their position in Section A. Congratulations to our team manager Ms Brenda Mafunisa, who was awarded Manager of the Tournament!
  • In table tennis, two team members did exceptionally well. Kagiso Sejamoholo competed in the top eight in male singles, and Keitumetse Moncho competed in the top nine in female singles.
  • Tennis coach Nolan Van De Merwe was asked to represent USSA during live broadcasting on SABC.
  • In aerobics, our team wowed the judges. In the team challenges, they won gold in Hip Hop Funk and bronze in Step Box. Individually, Nti Motsamai won silver, while Nti Motsamai, Katlego Dibeco and Kagisho Kgoele all walked away with bronze medals.
  • Out of 22 universities, our female chess team ranked sixth in the country. Celima Mundama ranked eight out of 91 players and obtained USSA colours for Chess.

Here’s to building on our strong foundation next year and reaching new heights in the sporting arena. See you in 2023!
