SPU and North Carolina A&T State University formalise strategic partnership
On 22 July 2025, a new chapter in international academic collaboration unfolded at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) when we hosted a high-level delegation from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), for a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, held in the Council Chambers of SPU’s newly built Great Hall. The MoU aims to strengthen academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. The visit follows NC A&T’s initial engagement with SPU last year, where both institutions expressed a strong interest in exploring joint opportunities across teaching, research, and community engagement.
The engagement was led by Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Debra Meyer, who, in her welcome remarks, shared her excitement about the partnership’s potential. She highlighted SPU’s growth, expanding programme offerings and the need to develop local talent to address challenges in mining, sustainable energy, and water scarcity. Prof Meyer expressed interest in collaborating with NC A&T in agriculture, a key sector in the Northern Cape. She added that planned centres, such as the Centre for Renewable Energy and the Centre for Mineral Beneficiation, will further strengthen future collaboration, and emphasised that this partnership holds great potential for advancing impactful, solution-driven research that responds to both regional priorities and global challenges.
NC T&A’s Vice-Chancellor and General Counsel, (Office of Legal Services), Dr Melissa Jackson Holloway, emphasised the role of scholars and researchers in driving global change. She spoke about the importance of looking beyond the confines of campuses, cities and even national borders to create meaningful impact. Dr Holloway expressed confidence that the partnership has brought together individuals ready to engage in these critical conversations and collaborate to shape a better world.
In a video message, Dr James Martin II, Chancellor of NC T&A, highlighted the value of this collaboration in enriching the academic and cultural experiences of students, faculty, and professional staff at both institutions. He described the partnership as more than a formal agreement, but rather a shared vision for building global bridges of knowledge, innovation, and understanding. Together, he noted, the two universities are laying the foundation for meaningful exchanges, joint research opportunities, and programmes that will empower the next generation of leaders.
Prof Meyer and Dr Holloway undertook the ceremonial signing of the MOU, a gesture symbolising the shared commitment between the two institutions.
The MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration, with a strong emphasis on academic alignment in key disciplines, particularly within STEM fields. It aims to foster joint research, student and faculty exchange programmes, and shared community outreach initiatives. The partnership seeks to expand global engagement through international collaboration, industry and NGO partnerships, and experiential learning opportunities. It also supports innovation in teaching and learning through digital education, virtual platforms, and interdisciplinary curriculum development. Additionally, the agreement prioritises applied research with real-world impact, the growth of postgraduate supervision and academic staff development, and the advancement of inclusive library and student support services to enhance research and student success.
This collaboration reflects the institutions’ complementary strengths and a shared vision for an inclusive, transformative and globally engaged higher education environment where collaboration thrives. This signifies a key milestone in SPU’s internationalisation agenda and our dedication to fostering inclusive, cross-border academic networks that benefit students, staff and communities.
