There is a growing concern regarding the number of violent crimes affecting our country. We read and hear about students and staff being robbed, assaulted, and raped on university campuses across the country.
In efforts to create a safer campus environment, the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Campus Security, in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs and the Employee Wellness office, will be launching a Safety Week Drive from 19-21 July 2023 on the Central and South campuses.
The theme of this initiative is ‘Our Campus, Our Safety’ and it seeks to create awareness about campus safety and security for both students and staff. The Safety Week further aims to raise awareness on student and staff wellness and the importance that it plays in building a safer campus and community.
The drive will be packed with activities and seminars that aim to advance the intentions of Campus Security regarding safety on our campuses. These activities include issues concerning campus safety, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and safety for LGBTI students and national and international students. The SPU community will have the opportunity to engage with various departments on numerous safety issues that affect them daily. They will also be given the opportunity to provide suggestions to Campus Security on how to improve current safety systems.
Key stakeholders such as the South African Police Services (SAPS), and ER24 will aid in spreading the message on safety and security, as well as health and wellness – both on and off campus.
The aspiration of Campus Security is that, at the end of the campaign, Campus Security is no longer viewed as an impersonal entity but seen as an entity that cares about our safety and security.
