On the early morning of 16 September 2023, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) staged its annual Birthday Colour Run at Windhoek Draught Park Stadium. This year’s event was particularly special as it forms part of SPU’s series of celebratory activities marking its 10th anniversary; a decade of excellence. Despite an unexpected chilly breeze, more than 500 participants energetically completed distances of 4.9km, 10km and 21.1km.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Andrew Crouch kicked off the proceedings, articulating the purpose and vision behind this colourful affair. He underscored the significance of such events in promoting healthy living and strengthening community bonds between the university and the wider public. Furthermore, he acknowledged the inclusion of participants with disabilities, reinforcing the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting persons with disabilities.
The official start was followed by races where athletes were showered with bursts of colour as they navigated the course. SPU’s mascot Gemmie delighted both participants and children, who were keen to snap photos with him.
The day unfolded with lucky draw prizes, interactive games and quizzes about the university, followed by an award ceremony honouring the winners in each category of the SPU Colour Run.
