Yesterday 124 top-performing learners from the Namakwa, ZF Mgcawu and John Taolo Gaetsewe districts were officially welcomed as the 2025 cohort of the Talent Pipeline Programme (TPP).
The Talent Pipeline Programme is a flagship initiative of SPU that aims to identify, support and uplift high-achieving Grade 10 to 12 learners from under-resourced communities in the Northern Cape. It provides academic enrichment in Mathematics and Physical Science, career guidance, psychosocial support, exposure to university life and personal development opportunities over a three-year period. The goal is to strengthen their readiness for higher education and equip them with the tools needed to succeed and thrive beyond matric.
In a warm and inspiring welcome address, Dr Caroline Hoorn, Senior Manager of the TPP, spoke directly to the learners’ sense of identity and purpose. She reminded them that their presence at SPU was no coincidence.
“The fact that you are here means you have been recognised as top achievers of the province,” she said. “That recognition alone is powerful. You belong here.”
Dr Hoorn offered a special message to the Grade 10s, encouraging them to see this as the beginning of a meaningful, three-year journey that will change their lives.
“We are so happy to have our new Grade 10 learners from the John Taolo Gaetsewe District this year. You are starting now, and we want you to go through the full programme – just like our current Grade 12s who will soon be exiting. Remember this is now your home too.”
Her words sparked pride and excitement among the learners, many of whom are encountering a university environment for the first time. The sense of belonging and recognition was tangible.
Following the ceremony, learners were introduced to their mentors and tutors – dedicated individuals SPU students who will support their academic and personal development. They then completed a Mathematics and Physical Sciences pre-test, designed to assess their current academic level and inform targeted support. Later in the day, undertook a guided campus tour, that allowed them to experience the vibe and spirit of learning at SPU.
From tomorrow, learners will begin an exciting and demanding programme that includes academic sessions, entrepreneurship development, mentorship and creative exploration. Highlights still to come include a Sport Day, a Talent Show and a special Matric Farewell for the 42 Grade 12 learners concluding their TPP journey this year.
These young minds are not visitors on our campus; they are our future students, leaders, and changemakers – and their journey at SPU is the first bold step toward enabling brighter futures for themselves, their communities and our country.
