Closing date extended – Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Inclusive Education and Primary School Mathematics Education

The Faculty of Education at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) invites applications for two prestigious Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, commencing in February 2026.

These fellowships form part of SPU’s commitment to advancing research excellence, developing early-career scholars, and strengthening academic leadership across key areas of educational inquiry.

  1. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Primary School Mathematics Education

(Foundation Phase & Intermediate Phase)

Duration: 1 January 2026 – 31 December 2027

This fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for an early-career scholar to advance research in Primary School Mathematics Education (Grades R–6), with a focus on the South African and broader African education contexts. The selected fellow will collaborate with experienced researchers in the Faculty of Education to conduct high-impact, interdisciplinary research in Mathematics Education, Teacher Education and Inclusive Education.

2. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Inclusive Education

Reference: PD/07/2025
Duration: 1 January 2026 – 31 December 2027

Hosted by the Centre for the Advancement of Rural and Inclusive Education Research (CARIER) in the faculty, this fellowship provides a dynamic platform for an emerging scholar to engage in research that deepens understanding of Inclusive Education in South African and African contexts. The appointed fellow will work closely with researchers in Rural Education, Language Education and Mathematics Education, contributing to a growing body of scholarship focused on inclusive, contextually grounded teaching and learning practices.

Bursary Value and Duration

Each fellowship provides a tax-free bursary of R320 000 per year, plus an additional R40 000 research-expense allowance. The award is granted for a two-year period, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory annual performance.

Application Deadline

Applications close on Friday, 19 December 2025.
The assumption of duty is expected no later than 1 February 2026.
