SPU congratulates Dr Simbarashe Jombo, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, who has been awarded a National Research Foundation (NRF) Y2 rating, (effective since January 2025). This recognition, granted by the NRF acknowledges his established track record of quality research outputs and growing international recognition in his field of physical and earth sciences. He firmly believes in impactful research, “I believe research must not only advance knowledge, but it must also solve real problems. If our work does not impact communities, then we have missed the point,” he said, reflecting SPU’s commitment to produce new knowledge and lead with impactful research, in response to key challenges of the region.
The NRF Y2 rating is specially awarded to promising young researchers who demonstrate the potential to become future leaders in their disciplines. This achievement reflects Dr Jombo’s ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge through impactful research. It also supports his involvement in initiatives aimed at mentoring emerging scholars, contributing to national development goals, and fostering innovation within his academic community.
Dr Jombo is a dynamic early-career researcher specialising in the application of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and machine learning for environmental management. His interdisciplinary research addresses critical environmental challenges such as land degradation, climate vulnerability, and sustainable land use, areas that are directly relevant to the socio-ecological context of the Northern Cape and beyond.
Dr Jombo’s expertise significantly advances SPU’s institutional priorities: his high-quality research enhances academic excellence and visibility through impactful publications and collaborations; his applied work supports community engagement by generating knowledge relevant to local development and environmental resilience; and his involvement in cutting-edge technologies creates opportunities for student success through mentorship, skills transfer, and research training in emerging fields.
