Sol Plaatje University recently hosted its annual Employee Wellness Day under the theme Prioritising Employee Wellness and Advancing Excellence, bringing staff together to focus on an essential aspect of the University’s work: the wellbeing of the people who contribute to its teaching, learning, research, innovation and community engagement.
Hosted by the Human Resources Department through the Employee Wellness Office, the event provided staff with access to health screenings, wellness resources, financial wellbeing information and support services.
In her welcome address, Director of Human Resources Ms Neo Bila said the day was more than an event on the University calendar. She noted that it reflected SPU’s collective commitment to the wellbeing of its employees and emphasised that employee wellness is a strategic investment in the people who contribute to the success and growth of the institution.
Ms Bila further encouraged employees to make use of the University’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which is available to both employees and their families. She highlighted that the programme offers confidential counselling and psychological support services aimed at promoting wellbeing and providing assistance during personal and professional challenges.
SPU acknowledges the external stakeholders, service providers, wellness practitioners and healthcare partners who supported the day. Their participation strengthened the purpose of the event and contributed to a meaningful wellness experience for staff.
The initiative reflects SPU’s ongoing commitment to creating a healthy, supportive and enabling work environment where employees are valued, supported and able to contribute meaningfully to the University’s academic project and strategic objectives.
