First-year student, Abel Mokwena, makes professional debut

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of first-year Bachelor of Arts student Abel Mokwena, who made his professional debut for the Northern Cape Heats.

A talented cricketer from Kimberley, Mokwena’s journey to the professional stage is a testament to his dedication and skill.

Identified by SPU’s cricket team for his exceptional performances, he has already built an impressive sporting résumé. His talent was first recognized while he was at Bishops High School in the Western Cape, where he captained the Western Cape Province Schools’ U15 team. He later represented the University of Johannesburg before joining SPU on a cricket bursary in 2025.

The Northern Cape Heats is the province’s professional cricket team and the highest level of competitive cricket in the Northern Cape, making Mokwena’s selection a major achievement. The team competes at Level 2 of Cricket South Africa’s 50-over format, showcasing some of the region’s best cricketing talent.

SPU actively supports student-athletes in balancing their academic and sporting careers, ensuring they have the flexibility to excel in both. Mokwena’s achievement is a milestone that highlights the University’s dedication to fostering sporting talent and contributing to the broader sporting landscape in the Northern Cape and beyond.

As Mokwena embarks on his professional cricket journey, SPU applauds his success and looks forward to witnessing his impact on and off the field.
