Gemmies set for first home clash at Suzuki Stadium

Our Gemmies play at home this Friday night, 20 February, following a demanding start to the 2026 FNB Varsity Shield tournament.

In the season opener, FNB UKZN struck early to take a 5 – 0 lead before FNB SPU responded to level the score at 5 – 5. The home side regained momentum to carry a 20 to 5 advantage into half-time. Despite the pressure, the Gemmies regrouped strongly after the break, showing renewed energy and resilience as they applied sustained pressure and refused to back down, even as FNB UKZN capitalised on key opportunities to close out the match 46 to 15.

After the tough result in Durban last week, attention now turns to what promises to be a defining moment this season: our first home game at Suzuki Stadium.

There is excitement across our community, and we are ready to fill the stands as FNB SPU takes on FNB WSU under the Friday night lights in Kimberley.

The opening match tested the squad’s resilience and exposed areas for growth, but it also revealed the character within this young team.

Head Coach Brendell Malcolm Brandt says playing at home will provide an important lift for the squad.

“We are excited to play our first home game. It will be special to play in front of our own community.”

Reflecting on the opening fixture, Brandt acknowledged the areas identified for improvement.

“We had too many unforced errors, and our game management and control need improvement. Those are areas we have worked on this week.”

He also emphasised the fighting spirit of his squad. “We have a young team, but what stood out for me is that they fought until the end. We are really looking forward to playing at home where our pride, our people, and our passion come together.”

Friday night is about response.

It is about growth.

It is about defending home ground.

Most importantly, it is about igniting Gemmie Fire in Kimberley.
