Dr Garth Benneyworth, a notable authority on the liberation struggle, presented his paper, Reconstructing the Raid, to a conference which brought together veterans from the 1960s era and seven international academics who engaged in a two-day conversation on that era of the liberation struggle.

Dr Benneyworth’s paper was based on his pioneering and original research done on Liliesleaf and the papers published in 2017. Liliesleaf Farm, located in Johannesburg, was a farm used secretly by African National Congress activists in the 1960s.

The conference, “The Rivonia Generation and the Turn to Armed Struggle in South Africa”, was hosted by the Liliesleaf A Place of Liberation, Rivonia in Johannesburg in March this year.

The keynote speaker on the day was General Siphiwe Nyanda.

Sharing a moment of camaraderie: Garth Benneyworth, Nicolas Wolpe and Mac Maharaj.
