Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is delighted to introduce Professor Odireleng Martin Ntwaeaborwa, our first Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. With an impressive track record in academia Professor Ntwaeaborwa is poised to transform the landscape of STEM education at our institution.
Professor Ntwaeaborwa, a B-rated NRF Scientist, boasts an exceptional research portfolio with more than 275 published peer-reviewed articles, seven book chapters, and an edited book to his name. His guidance has led more than 25 PhD and 21 MSc students to successful graduation. His academic journey commenced at North-West University, Mahikeng Campus, where he earned his undergraduate and honours degrees in Physics, followed by a Masters degree in Physics. His PhD in Solid State Physics was awarded by the University of the Free State in 2006, a period during which he also enhanced his research through collaborations with the University of Florida and the University of Pennsylvania.
An early pioneer in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Professor Ntwaeaborwa’s research has earned him international recognition, particularly in the fields of surface science and optoelectronic luminescent nanomaterials, with applications ranging from solar cells to phototherapy. His efforts have significantly contributed to the development of research infrastructure at both the University of the Free State and the University of the Witwatersrand. His commitment to research development is further evidenced by his active participation in various academic and research committees.
As Dean, Professor Ntwaeaborwa aims to lead the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences with a focus on high-quality, technically advanced education that aligns with the University’s strategic goals. He is dedicated to fostering a sustainable and inclusive faculty environment, rooted in social justice. His vision includes enhancing the faculty’s research capabilities in emerging fields such as data science, artificial intelligence, and agricultural sciences, thereby driving forward the University’s mission in these critical areas.
